@henrywinter I’m not having the winter break argument but you’re spot on about the leagues they play in. It’s not just about them being able to rest players it’s about the intensity and quality of the leagues.

One of the greatest games in recent memory. Positivity in motion. Total football, total entertainment. Some of the best players in the world on view. Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Doue, Kane, Olise, Luis Diaz, and others. A lot of talk about how fresh PSG and Bayern Munich players look. Dominate their leagues so can rest and rotate. Also helps they have a winter break. Two weeks in France. Three weeks in Germany. The English plough on through winter, of course. Food for thought for the Premier League after this feast of football. But football of this exceptional calibre and pace is also a mindset and philosophy. Encouraged by enlightened coaches. Good players told to go out there and express themselves. Little diving or dissent, just elite competitors getting on with the game. A great game. Encore 🙌 #PSGBAY

I've had it confirmed per @Tony_Diver's story there *was* a private conversation between Starmer and Rayner at the school - but that no offer of returning to cabinet has been made, or accepted. Yet! Starmer has, of course, repeatedly said he wants Rayner back in his top team but we - and others - have reported that she'd be in two minds about it...
Tony Diver@Tony_Diver

EXC: *Sir Keir Starmer has privately offered Angela Rayner a return to the Cabinet *They held a private discussion during a visit to a school on April 14 *Reshuffle could come as soon as next weekend *Rayner thought to be on the fence about rejoining telegraph.co.uk/politics/2026/…

@TacticallyMatt @Paul_Parr_1989 Are you messing? He’s the fucking reason we’re even talking about Europe. The board will be ecstatic with the job he’s done.

@Paul_Parr_1989 I think if you constantly talk about getting Europe, and don't deliver, you can't have too many complaints if the board aren't happy

✍️ Moyes in? Moyes out? The Everton boss is splitting the fan base. Some are unhappy, some are content. But why? The frustrations, the positives, and what Everton should do next when it comes to the manager.... offmatch.io/en/article/moy…

Arsenal legend Tony Adams believes Declan Rice should be their captain. “Declan is a super leader and super player. I feel he should be Arsenal captain.” Rice wore the armband against Sporting Lisbon in midweek and is expected to lead Arsenal again in today’s summit meeting with Manchester City at the Etihad. Even if Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were fit to start, Adams argues that Rice should lead the side, a point he made at the start of the season. “I thought he (Odegaard) just needed the freedom to go and play without the extra stuff added,” Adams says. “When you talk about leadership, it's quite difficult and it has changed. "I was the first one in training every morning. I thought that was it (leadership). I'm going to create an environment where we all talk about our stuff. Back then, we were all free to have opinions, we can all talk around the table and then we do what George (Graham) wants! “After I made the comment about Odegaard, Arteta went to the players and said: ‘who do you want as captain?’ And they all went (‘Odegaard’). Well, they're not going to say it to him, are they? ‘We love Odegaard! Hooray!’ So, why do you need your captain, then?’” Adams believes the captain should be a more robust character, one more in his mould as a more physical player. “Gabriel, these kind of players for the Arsenal.” Adams was at Wembley for Arsenal’s last meeting with City, the Carabao Cup final defeat, and saw how City’s captain Bernardo Silva liaised with Pep Guardiola. “You're looking at Silva with his relationship with Pep. You could see an instant chemistry there. There was a leader there and he's like, ‘if there's a problem’ (he’ll sort it)’. I didn't see the same with Arsenal.” Adams, who has just published a new book “1996”, also opened up on how close he was to joining Manchester United that year. He was off the booze after Euro 96, and interested United even more now that “I’d got clean and sober”. Adams was concerned about the club’s ambition and their ability to catch United. Arsenal’s incoming manager, Arsene Wenger, was an unknown quantity and was not arriving until October. So Adams spoke to the Arsenal chairman, Peter Hill-Wood. “Peter said: ‘we’ve got a good man coming, Arsene’s on the way’. “He phones me in the car and says, ‘we’ve got a new investor, Danny Fiszman's coming in’. He's got £50m and you're going to treble your salary’.” (Fiszman was already on the board; 1996 saw his buying of further shares from David Dein). “I went, ‘oh! I'll stay!’ And then I told Alex, ‘sorry, I'm not coming in’.” Adams tells the story partly to highlight that captains were stronger and more vocal then. “We hadn't won the league for five years, and I've got clean and sober, and got a bit of self-respect back. So I went, ‘what's the ambition of the club?’ So you got a club captain talking to the owner about ambition for Arsenal Football Club. It will never happen (now). I don't think you can see it in the industry that it is today. Who is going to challenge now as captain?” #AFC #MCIARS 1/2

Sporting Lisbon was the last time. We were dreadful. But we’ve been dreadful pretty much every game without Ødegaard. It’s like watching England play. Perfect scenario for someone to ‘take us up a level’ through whatever it is in your imagination (which, as you admit you understand, a player can do anyway even if he’s not got a piece of cloth around his arm).

@henrywinter @elplaga008 Looking from the outside it’s baffled me how Rice wasn’t captain especially as Odegaard hasn’t been in the side.I get people saying Rice can still be a leader without the armband. But I just feel he’s the type of person who will step up to another level and take the team with him

@elplaga008 Arteta asked players at start of the season and they were very supportive of Odegaard. Odegaard and Saka absence decides it anyway tbh. Plus Arsenal need every player to be a leader.

@wesstreeting See how easy it is to call him out. I have no idea when Labour has let him off the hook for so long. You’ve literally let him build up a lead in the polls by not calling out their shite.

@henrywinter On what planet is another points deduction going to help the situation. Correct me if I’m wrong but these rules are in place to protect the clubs aren’t they. The EFL approved the con mans takeover and now the club are getting punished

The man who wants to rescue Sheffield Wednesday, American businessman David Storch, says he has been “informed that a 15-point penalty is set to be imposed at the start of next season” in League One. The outgoing owner Dejphon Chansiri should hang his head in shame at the damage he has inflicted on Sheffield Wednesday. He can’t have a conscience. Otherwise he’d accept a compromise on bid price.  The EFL should have been tougher with Chansiri quicker. The FA should remember it is supposed to be custodians of the game and protect clubs. The importance of an Independent Football Regulator, much delayed by vested interests, is highlighted again by events at Wednesday.  At the moment, the people being punished at Wednesday are fans, players, staff and the man who wants to save them. Shameful situation engulfing a historic club which could have been avoided with stronger leadership by the authorities. And Chansiri locating some principles. #SWFC

@Richlloyd1984 Just said the same Spurs have wolves this month that gets them to 33 points. But after that, I'm not sure they get any more unless they beat Everton on the last day, of course

If Leeds hold on that’s them pretty much safe I reckon . It’s probably between Spurs, West Ham and Forest now . I’m at the stage where I just can’t see Spurs getting out of this

Trump posts a bonkers rant: “I know why Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones have all been fighting me for years, especially by the fact that they think it is wonderful for Iran, the Number One State Sponsor of Terror, to have a Nuclear Weapon — Because they have one thing in common, Low IQs. They’re stupid people, they know it, their families know it, and everyone else knows it, too! Look at their past, look at their record. They don’t have what it takes, and they never did! They’ve all been thrown off Television, lost their Shows, and aren’t even invited on TV because nobody cares about them, they’re NUT JOBS, TROUBLEMAKERS, and will say anything necessary for some “free” and cheap publicity. Now they think they get some “clicks” because they have Third Rate Podcasts, but nobody’s talking about them, and their views are the opposite of MAGA — Or I wouldn’t have won the Presidential Election in a LANDSLIDE. MAGA agrees with me, and just gave CNN a 100% Approval Rating of “TRUMP,” not Hand Flailing Fools like Tucker Carlson, who couldn’t even finish College, he was a broken man when he got fired from Fox, and he’s never been the same — Perhaps he should see a good psychiatrist! Or Megyn Kelly, who nastily asked me the now famous, ‘Only Rosie O’Donnell,’ question, or ‘Crazy’ Candace Owens, who accuses the Highly Respected First Lady of France of being a man, when she is not, and will hopefully win lots of money in the ongoing lawsuit. Actually, to me, the First Lady of France is a far more beautiful woman than Candace, in fact, it’s not even close”
