Church drawing on tour! For my first offering of the year, here's St Materiana's Church in Tintagel. I hiked along the coastal path with my sketchbook to relish an afternoon drawing. My winter hibernation is over so back to Leicestershire churches very soon!! 😁

Guinevere of Mason.
What strikes me about this is 1) the clarity of language , 2) the "localness" of the locations. Wingates is not very big ! A life before cars.

'Come, madam, you must straight to Westminster, there to be crowned Richard's royal queen' - Richard III (IV, 1) Anne of Bohemia was crowned in Westminster Abbey in January 1382, two days after marrying Richard II. The ceremonial instructions for the service are set out in the Liber Regalis (or royal book) - a beautifully-illuminated manuscript thought to have been made for the occasion. Despite various changes over the centuries, the instructions it gives still form the basis of the coronation service today. #ShakespeareSunday

Yesterday I got my earphones out of their charging case and promptly dropped one into my beer. As I sat there in the pub watching it slowly sink to the bottom of my pint glass, I thought “oh dear. That’s not ideal”. Or words to that effect. I fished it out and it was emitting a high pitched squealing sound. Like listening to Taylor Swift, so I promptly nipped next door and bought some jasmine rice. Cheaper rices were available, but I wanted the best for my earphone. I kept it in the rice overnight and today and have just tested it. It works perfectly. So there you are folks. Jasmine rice is the perfect thing for rescuing beer soaked earphones.

When I was in my late teens, I got into books. Reading 60-90 minutes. I got a happy rush just thinking about getting in my cosy bed, turning on the bedside yellow lamp, and disappearing into a totally different world. I read thick books. Just so that I can stay longer in that world. I read Harry Potter. Anna Karenina. Brothers Karamazov. Crime & Punishment. In Search Of Lost Time. Later working I kept the habit by reading during commute to work in the metro. I read 100 Years of Solitude. The Fountain Head. And almost all books by Murakami. I did it to pass time. But now I see it. The long-term effect of 15 years of reading. It changes your brain. It feels like therapy. Slows you down. Helps you notice the little things. Expands your perception of the world and people. Makes you smarter. And an interesting person probably.

I agree but also, Warsh was in M&A for only five or six years. He was a grunt. He never became a managing director or partner. He wouldn't know how to structure a deal or advise a CEO, for instance. He was barely post-Excel. That's why he couldn't see that combining Goldman and Morgan Stanley would have been disastrous.
Hal Singer@HalSinger

Given Warsh's M&A background, I suspect that he, like Powell, could never recognize seller-driven inflation. Also note how Warsh tried (and failed, thankfully) to combine Goldman and Citigroup during the 2008 crisis--as if we don't have enough consolidation in the banking industry. These kind of appointments feed the anti-oligarch sentiment and cement the view that the Fed is acting at the behest of Wall Street.

US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery on Friday afternoon placed 44 new Danish flags in the flower planters outside the US Embassy, assisted by embassy staff. “I have been away this week — I was in Washington,” Howery told TV 2. “I participated in meetings between Greenland, Denmark and the United States.” “I have followed the misunderstanding surrounding the flags. I landed today, and I am now placing 44 flags in honor of the Danish soldiers who fell in Afghanistan,” he said. “I have the greatest respect for the Danish contributions. I know there have been many questions and a great deal of grief surrounding these flags.” Howery also said that he and embassy staff hold Danish veterans in high regard. “My team here at the embassy and I have the utmost respect for the Danish contributions,” he said. “Unfortunately, my team and I were not informed about the flags in advance. Had we been, we would not have removed them.” —TV2

When I was at school - in what seems to have been Victorian England in retrospect - pencils were sharpened by going up to the front of the class and cranking the handle of a contraption mounted on the teacher’s desk.

Someone needs to make an AI video creation tool that makes everything look a bit shit - for the British and Dutch markets. Unlike the US, which likes its soap operas (and porn, apparently) to be set in expensive locations, we and our Dutch cousins like such things to be a bit gritty and realistic. Peeling wallpaper would be a start.

Thinking of buying a million copies of Winters in the World and handing them out to friends, family, strangers like a street-corner evangelist. Yes, it’s that good. The sort of book that changes not only your thinking but the way you inhabit this world. Everyone must read it.
