What you’re missing is that the 80s didn’t provide a clean break into the 90s. What we look at as “80s” just rolled clean into the early and mid 90s.

as someone born in 1982, I can assure you that 80s nostalgia was virtually nonexistent in the 90s, and that Wedding Singer was a huge exception and the start of what became perpetual 80s nostalgia this century. when I was a teen in the 90s, *nothing* was more uncool than the 80s.

It didn’t kick off 80’s nostalgia because 80’s nostalgia has literally never stopped being a “thing.” There has been like zero lapse in 80’s nostalgia since the 80’s. It has remained an oddly consistent part of collective pop culture. I mean the wedding singer came out in 1998
