@danielcincu @DJSnM You’re probably right, but that’s still a crazy fox hunt. I use a 50mW transmitter as a “last mile” beacon on my high altitude balloons. It’s effective, but you’ve gotta be already in the ballpark.

NASA had film cameras on the second stage of the Saturn V to capture staging events, the cameras would be ejected and recovered from the ocean, one problem was the cameras and their film needed to be in places that could easily be ejected which meant there were a few things that they wanted to film which they couldn't film. NASA investigated the concept of having a camera in one location and storing the footage elsewhere in a return pod that was in a location that could be ejected. Obviously these days you'd just run a wire carrying the video data, but in this case when I say 'footage' I literally mean a hundred feet of 16mm film. They built and tested a system where the film from a camera would move through tubes to the pick up reel for recovery. This would also enable them to consolidate the film recovery in a single capsule which would be larger and better equipped. ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/…
