Senegal did what DR Congo did to some foreign born players who switched nationality last minute after stalling on switching. In 2018, Senegal approached Malang Sarr to play for them but he refused, because he was waiting for France. As of 2016, Sarr was captain of France U-20 team and progressed from France U16 to France U21. He moved from Nice to Chelsea, a big club. Thus, he had high hopes for a senior call up cos everything was going so well for him that time. But he went on loan for 3 straight seasons and couldn’t make it at Chelsea, playing only 8 games in 4 years. He ended up moving to Lens permanently in 2024. In that same time, so many lads were springing up for Senegal including Moustapha Mbow. He moved from Senegal to Reims in 2019, went on loan and his stock grew before he joined Paris FC in Ligue 2, he helped them secure promotion to Ligue 1 and went on to play 31 games this season for them. In his first ever senior call, Mbow was selected for the World Cup ahead of Malang Sarr. They play in the same league, same position, both 30+ games this season. Same age bracket. But one was born in France and said NO when Senegal approached him and the other was born in Senegal and fought to represent the nation without looking back. Mbow is going to the World Cup. Sarr missed his chance.
