@feuilletonopfer @nik0p0l5 MOL definitely feels too big to fry, MET is more interesting for me because it was used for even sketchier shenanigans (eg. Transnistria) and I was wondering if they flew too close to the sun.

The working hypothesis remains that the interior ministry brass had compromat on senior ministers and, with Magyar already organically ahead in the polls, used it to negotiate Orbán's exit; this would be circumstantial evidence in favour thereof.
Franz Pokorny@feuilletonopfer

Magyar (or so rumour has it) entrusting the interior ministry to a career policeman who rose through the ranks under the previous government and then went to work for Hungary's top oligarch is Eastern European politics at its best.

@tothcsabatibor I was aware there's a new guy but not that the connection is that blatant.

Also the test case for claims that he will get "tough" on dealings with Russia.

If Magyar doesn't do anything about Lakatos and MET, then to my mind it's clear that the oligarchs threw Orban overboard to keep the good times rolling.

@CromRedoubt @BovrilG Isn't the Big Society conceptually more about bottom-up volunteerism than top down Quangos with dead Quaker money? Genuine question here, it seems more in the former mold of Christian Democracy.

@BohunkSupremacy I don't know if I actually believe that the Ethical Policy was the decisive factor in setting the grounds for Indonesian nationalism, but it definitely changed the history of the region as a whole and that book shaped views to make it happen.

@BohunkSupremacy Do you mean the contemporary period or modernity as a whole? For the latter there's Eduard Douwes Dekker, who wrote Max Havelaar. Don't think it's a fantastic book, but it was enormously impactful at the time & much later inspired the International Fairtrade Certification Mark.

Talking to a friend about the literatures of various European nations. Despite the two of us being well-educated, we couldn’t think of a single Dutch novelist—with sole exception of Anne Frank—who’d made any major contributions to modern literature. What are the Dutch writing?
Bohunk Supremacist@BohunkSupremacy

I love how the Dutch went supernova in the 17th century—became world’s dominant maritime power; acquired colonies in both Americas, Africa, Asia; produced arguably the greatest cohort of painters the world’s ever seen—and then stepped back into relative obscurity forever.

@Miyhnea @RWFlatitude @nik0p0l5 Iliescu wanted to become what Venezuela turned into but had external constraints, the rest are a little more clued into the fact that you can't go too far or you get shanked

@Miyhnea I was talking about Orban continuing to run his country into the ground, UDMR kleptocracy is an iron law of politics by now

The scenario where Tisza wins, Magyar falls on his sword after having to fix public finances and govern through a crisis and Orban comes back seems pretty believable. Guess it depends on how ruthlessly Magyar will prosecute him.

I would be pretty content watching Orban continue to plunder Hungary and run it into the ground, but his defeat would put a lot of Postliberal grifters out of a job. Tough choices.
