I couldn't believe Harold Baines only hit 30+ doubles in a season twice, but it is true.
He did however hit exactly 29 doubles in a season FIVE different times.
Also, I really don't buy the never elite thing. He led the AL in slugging in 1984 while playing RF. Seems kinda elite.
I feel like anytime a player has an OPS over .900, which Baines did five different times, that is pretty elite. I live in Chicago. Ernie Banks had five seasons with over a .900 OPS.
Finally, he was elite in the 1992, 1997, and 1999 postseason.
I also don't think Baines is a Hall of Famer....he is actually in the HOF. It is just a fact.

If you think Baines is a hall of famer then you are saying being above average for a long time is hall worthy. He was NEVER elite. It’s the opposite of what you rail against with rate stats. Counting numbers don’t tell the whole story either. Harold Baines NEVER - scored 100 runs in a season - had 200 hits - had a 30 homer season - never walked 75 times - had a 5 war season - never finished in the top 8 of mvp voting in his own league He had 30 doubles in a season twice in 22 years. 100 rbi 3 times (barely). Had a 140ops+ 3 times. For a guy who only hit, he never did it at a HOF level

The only argument is Baines gets too much hate, which your statement here proves.
When Baines retired in 2001, he was one of eleven players in MLB history to record 2800+ hits, 350+ home runs, and 1600+ RBI.
Out of those eleven, only Babe Ruth had fewer plate appearances.
Baines had a career few other players in MLB history had. Yes, he played a long time. If that were easy, everyone would do it. It is not though. Which is why he was able to put up career numbers that few other players have.
Yes, he is the worst player on this list. No, that is nothing to be embarrassed by and definitely does not mean he should not be in Cooperstown.

Well we disagree there. I don’t think he deserves “proper recognition” because they made a mistake putting him in.
He’s a pro baseball player that can be evaluated like any other. There’s nothing wrong with having an excellent big league career. I’m sure he’s a great guy. I don’t have to pretend like he was something he isn’t. If every deserving guy was in the hall it wouldn’t be an issue.

I would not not have voted him in.
But he’s in.
So I celebrate his achievements because he was a great MLB player for a long time.
He deserves proper recognition instead of constantly getting dragged through the mud.

He was barely a top 10 hitter in his own league that year Murray Mattingly Winfield Evans Avon Davis Ripken Henderson Hrbek Tied with Kirk Gibson for 10th in ops+ He was basically the 15th best hitter in all of baseball in what was *clearly* the best season of his career. Alvin Davis was a rookie that year and had a better season than Baines ever did

I disagree, respectfully. It means you had an excellent major league career that is worthy of respect and admiration. I admire his consistency and longevity - for real. He was also fortunate with health and genes, and rule changes.
Elite players do elite things. He never did.
We’re talking about the highest honor in baseball history. Just because I don’t think he deserves to be in the HOF doesn’t mean I’m dragging him.
I think it’s worth talking about because it creates real issues with the process. If Baines is a HOF literally hundreds of players have an argument.
Baines was never as good as Don mattingly. Or Dale Murphy. Yet the veterans voted Baines because he hung a round a long time at a non hall of fame level? I’m sorry but it’s dumb 🤷♂️

Harold Baines recorded a 121 OPS+ during a 22-year MLB career.
That is a higher OPS+ than HOFers such as Gil Hodges, Andre Dawson, Carlos Beltran, Roberto Alomar, Adrian Beltre, Barry Larkin, Gary Carter, Derek Jeter, Robin Yount, Ryne Sandberg, Cal Ripken Jr., and Craig Biggio.
