I’ve been curious about the increased hostile atmosphere on this platform towards rail workers by some usual right wing media has-beens (e.g. Concrete Mike, Kelvin). Is it because they have an agenda against unions and easy targets like railways? Yes but there’s more… 1/

The railway and its people are too good at explaining why things can't happen - I despair that the same effort doesn't go into surmounting those challenges. Explaining something doesn't excuse or justify it.

@railnigel The issues over Sunday working and other issues would, I’ve little doubt, have made it impossible anyway. Getting the crews who signed 805s to also sign the route with the industrial relations as they are would be quite a challenge.

@Captain_Deltic @railnigel I cannot wait for this managed contract for TOCs to come to an end. The whole ‘DfT needs to sign it off’ is nauseating. We have managers who should be making decisions like this- having to pass the buck onto someone in Whitehall. Are these new 80x trains cleared via Settle?

@railnigel Don't forget that for much of the last thirty years managers have become resigned to be told what to do by DfT under 500 page plus contracts. Worse,they are no longer franchises but Contracted TOCs. Roll-on SGBR.

@RTKfarmer @UKLabour What’s the point here? Apples and pears. A farmer likely works for themselves and inherits the acres of family farm. Train Drivers work for a company as an employee. During leaf fall, it’s more likely I’m late getting home due to the track conditions. Certainly not home early.

Thought for the day. An experienced train driver get supported by @UKLabour at ~£60k takes home more than most farmers. Doesn’t have to buy the train or the track, has a manager to look after them and get to go home when there are leaves on the line or the wrong type of snow.

Just read in the Grauniad that BTP will have to cut 300 staff and close 17 offices due to lack of funding @TSSAunion mentioned but @ASLEFunion @RMTunion need to take this up with govt

On a train from Crewe to London. Was supposed to be 9 carriages, down to 4. All other London-bound trains are delayed so everyone is getting this specific train. Staff have also just announced that there’s no working toilet on the train either. Money well spent by Labour? ⬇️

This appeared on my feed. AI seems to be useful at reading and examining data then reproducing it. Pretty much replacing a lot of journalism and opinion pieces like this. No need for AI, we’ve had automatic trains since the Victoria Line was built long before AI Tom was born.

If we were serious about growth, we’d sack every tube and train driver in the country, replace the actual driving with AI, and hire in new people to be safety and ticket conductors on contacts from this century. This will obviously happen eventually, why are we putting it off?
