North Carolina’s Governor James B. Hunt now belongs to the ages. He was one of the last surviving Southern governors who helped lead his state out of the Jim Crow past. I was a beneficiary of a program he developed to give African-American youth an opportunity to serve in summer internships during high school. Later, after I finished Divinity School at Duke University, he appointed me at 29 years-of-age to lead the North Carolina Human Relations Commission, which enforced housing and labor laws and monitored and investigated hate groups. I thank God for the leadership and servantship of Governor Hunt, and for all the ways he sincerely tried to make things better. Thank God for all the ways he tried to lead North Carolina into the New South, caring about the mountains and the coast and all in between. I believe he never forgot that North Carolina ought to be a place where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great. His family are in my prayers as they celebrate his life and mourn their loss.
