The actual history of what happened in now so buried by pain, propaganda and myth that few know that David Ben Gurion came to London in 1947 actually begging the British to stay and extend their mandate. He feared the Jews were about to lose the war for Palestine a British evacuation was certain to trigger against a combined invasion Arab states. At a critical moment in history we see the British establishment marinating in its own idiocy, still buttered in imperial arrogance and dripping with contempt towards the Mandate's Jewish leader. Nobody that mattered would even see him. The most important meeting he could get was with Lord Chancellor Lord Sir William Jowitt. Even Churchill, who was in opposition, had no interest in meeting him. At least the rather peripheral Lord Chancellor did. Ben Gurion asked him to present to cabinet the next day that as the leader of the Jews in Palestine he wished the British to extend the Mandate by another five to ten years asking only to permit 100,000 Jews to enter the country and certain restrictions on land purchases and settlement be lifted. Ben Gurion would also commit not to declaring independence for at least five years. The cabinet showed no interest in this proposal and proceeded to hand over the Mandate to the United Nations. To this day the British establishment are, beyond a few historians, unaware this even occured.
