A very unfortunate update on Absolute Bagels.
Rafe Evans, the broker of the property, confirmed that Absolute Bagels is permanently closing, and that he will list the space at the end of next week.
"And we all agree another bagel store is the highest and best use of the space.”

Shocking Upper West Side bagel news. Absolute Bagels is "closed for good," multiple employees said on Thursday. The storefront is already shuttered. Unclear the reasoning for the closure but it is not the health department. “There are many problems. The owner is old.”

A huge loss. I learned so much from Patrick about biography. And even more about cultivating active curiosity and unerring positivity against all odds. I will miss his intellect and his kindness.

Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Patrick French. He was a wonderful writer, whose books on Francis Younghusband and VS Naipaul are classics of modern biographical writing. He was also a very fine human being, unfailingly generous to friends and strangers alike.
