yes like most of the apologism for the comparison i’m seeing ignores the fact that the film ultimately does frame this illusionary nostalgia in a positive light. it’s a lie but it’s a comforting and productive lie in the name of a deeper truth

this being a lure into a literal trap for childhood trauma is very interesting but i wish Spielberg could commit to leaning into that being a bad thing rather than something that retrospectively becomes a good thing
