Trades by Matt

How I move on after a Red day. Red days are inevitable and we will all have one, so it is important that you learn how to address them and move on from them. Unfortunately, not all red days are created equal. Some red days completely wreck your account, your emotions, and your physical body. Lets talk about how to get back in the saddle after experiencing a red day. The following assumes you have a profitable trading strategy. First things first. Accept it. You MUST know as a trader that we all have them, no matter what social media tells you. Every single person out there has bad trades and bad days. I personally find it helpful knowing that it will happen and that it happens to other people as well. Next thing, Address it. Depending on the type of red day (couple losers vs massive tilt) this might look a bit different. If you are trading your strategy and it has proven to work for you, sometimes the trades just don't hit. No one is 100% on trades. On days where I followed my setups, was patient, and the market didn't do what I thought, I address that I was seeing the market cleanly and move on. Not too much for me to do past this point usually. Being able to walk away is KEY on a day like this. If you don't walk away and enter the tilted world (me this past Friday, you can read that post) then the Address is a little different. You need to dissect it more. Look into the types of trades you were taking. What was your tipping point? Did it happen at a certain time of day? Were you not following your strategy? Were you being patient? Were you chasing a profit target to hard? These are more "journaling" style questions that you really need to dive deep on. After you dissect yourself and answer these questions it's time to address how we are moving on from this day. Step 3 is to Prevent. The questions above, of which there are surely more you should be asking yourself, should be happening in my opinion as soon as possible, but you must give yourself time to untilt in order to think objectively. Preventing means "What am I going to be doing different next time?" For me on Friday, my prevent involves an account shut off max loss built into the platform. For you, it might look different or involve different rules. An example of a rule that came out of this process for me, is to not trade the first 15 minutes of the market open. The final step is to Forget about it. Now I am not saying forget the steps above, but you have to be able to move on. If you are still suck in a negative thought, insecure, sad state of being based on a prior red day you will most likely experience a not good trading day in my opinion. You have to be able to have a clean emotional state and short term memory on a red day in order to return to Normal. The day after a terrible trading day is crucial. It's about returning to a normal and disciplined state. Being patient, looking for A+ setups, not being greedy. Following the strategy and discipline as if your life depended on it. Being able to execute an A+ trade if you see one the day after a red day allows you to build some confidence and get back to normal. From Day 1 after a trading day and on, we are building a new foundation where we learned from the Red day and are now operating at a higher trading level because of the Red day. Don't be scared of them, they will happen. Learn from them. Adapt from them. Improve from them. Don't let it define you. Be a better trader because of it. As always, live to trade another day. This entire process is only good if you learn how to stop before blowing your account. Good luck out there traders.
