It’s wild that Victoria now has a ‘First Peoples’ Assembly’, which, in reality, functions no different to the “Voice to Parliament” that Australians decisively rejected in the 2023 referendum. Elections for this ‘assembly’ are currently underway. However, non-Aboriginal Victorians are completely excluded from voting due to the eligibility rules. Given that the proposals and advice coming from this ‘assembly’ have the potential to affect all Victorians, through treaty negotiations, policy influence, and state legislation etc, it seems only reasonable that every Victorian should at least have a say in who represents them in this process. At the very minimum, Victorian taxpayers should not be forced to fund this sham democracy, which has already cost in excess of several hundred million dollars, and will continue to cost much more.
