A thousand-year-old box panel carved like a miniature garden. Made in Spain, probably Córdoba, this ivory panel once decorated a rectangular casket in the 10th or early 11th century. Its birds, animals, vines, and human figures were carved from a single piece of ivory, with tiny quartz stones once set into the eyes. A small object, but a remarkable display of the precision and luxury of caliphal ivory carving.
