I am speaking as a devotee who has traveled, looked closely, and seen the tragic reality with my own eyes.
When you see a millennium-old pillar drilled with holes for electrical wiring, patched with crude cement, or a priceless Chola inscription buried under cheap whitewash, it is a direct insult to our deities and the ancient sthapathis.
Meanwhile, ancient temple lands are trapped in unchecked encroachments and unpaid rents. The wealth vanishes while our roots starve, leaving thousands of ancient village temples to crumble without even enough funds for the archaka to light a single daily lamp. (ஒரு கால பூஜை)
The HR&CE department constantly uses two major excuses to justify its control and mislead the public:
🔺They claim the state stepped in to fix historical discrimination and inequality. This is deliberately misleading. Every temple follows its own strict Agama (spiritual laws) regarding who is consecrated to enter the sanctum and perform rituals. It was never a simple caste dynamic - even an "upper-caste" devotee is barred from the sanctum, while in many temples, the hereditary poojaris belong to entirely different communities based on their unique spiritual lineage. Twisting these localized traditions is just a tactic to create division and justify government interference.
🔺Then comes the claim that the officials are all Hindus. But checking a box on a job application doesn't give someone a heart full of bhakti.
We do not want minor administrative tweaks; we want the bureaucracy completely out. The FreeTNTemples movement is the collective cry of every devotee's heart.
Every other religious community in India manages its own places of worship with dignity.
🚩 Hindu temples deserve the exact same respect.
