IF YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES YOU MUST BELIEVE THAT PRIESTS DO FORGIVE SINS I remember counseling a young lady who opened up to tell me she still found it odd going to confess her sins to another human being when she could talk to God directly about it. I asked her a question. “Do you believe in miracles? Do you believe that in the name of Jesus the sick could get well, those possessed can be delivered, the blind can see etc etc?” She said yes. “Then you have no problem believing that in the name of Jesus sins could be forgiven.” “What is the connection” she asked me. I told her. The very first time Jesus told someone his sins were forgiven was during the healing of the paralytic (Mark 2:1-12). As the man couldn’t walk his friends brought him in a stretcher. They even had to remove the roof to bring him to the exact spot Jesus was because the doorway was crowded. Jesus took a look at him and said “Child, your sins are forgiven.” Those who were present began to wonder in their minds why this man was blaspheming. Only God could forgive sins so why was this man making such a claim? Jesus knew the thoughts running through their minds and confronted them. He asked them which was easier, to tell the young man his sons were forgiven or to heal him? So to prove to them that he had authority on earth to forgive sins, he told the paralyzed man to stand up and go home. And to their amazement, he stood up and left. This was a man who probably had a nervous breakdown for years that affected all his motor functions. But at Jesus’ words he stood up and left. The authority Jesus had, he gave to believers. This is why believers can do wonderful things in the name of Jesus. They can heal, they can perform miracles in the name of Jesus. But Jesus wanted forgiveness to also be a ministry. Confessing sins can be a very sensitive thing. Common sense would dictate that not everyone would have the discretion for this. That is why the church has restricted the ministry to trained and ordained clergy. While we do confess our sins directly to God, and to one another in church especially at the beginning of Mass when the priest calls us to confess our sins, this is mostly about venial sin and not mortal sin. 1John 5:16-17 says, “If anyone sees his brother committing what is not a deadly sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not deadly. There is a sin that is deadly; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not deadly.” The deadly sin is what the church calls mortal sin. The non-deadly is called venial sin. What we do when we have committed a mortal sin is to see a priest and confess. When Jesus was crucified and the disciples had to hide together for fear of the Jews, Jesus rose from the dead and stood among them and gave them the Holy Spirit specifically for the ministry of forgiveness of sins. He said to them: “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whosoever sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whosoever sins you retain are retained.” John 20: 22-23. It is obvious that Jesus wanted this to be a ministry, that is why he gave this empowerment to his disciples, not to all those who were following him about. At this point the disciples were even eleven as Judas had committed suicide. Much as he made the Last Supper exclusive and instituted the Holy Eucharist, so did he exclusively empower them to forgive sins. This empowerment comes much before the Holy Spirit comes down on all the believers at Pentecost. Acts 2:3. So Jesus gave the authority. In turn, those the apostles trained and laid hands on received this authority to carry out the special ministries. And this authority has been passed on through the laying on of hands from generation to generation. This is what we call apostolic succession. The anointing I have as a Catholic priest has come from the laying on of hands right from the time of Apostles, to my bishop and to me. And I do this on Christ’s behalf.

Mary, Woman of Faith, pray for us when doubts arise and the light seems dim. Help us cling to God’s Word, trusting that dawn will break after every night and that no darkness can overcome Christ. Amen🙏

@NTANewsNow Apart from raising revenue what are the direct impact of the new tax law on Nigerians? Is it quality and free education, improved healthcare, good roads, affordable transport, improved access to credit, etc. These are the discussions we shd be having before we are left dry again
