A Tulare County detective was ambushed and killed Thursday morning while serving an eviction notice in Porterville, CA. Detective Randy Hoppert was shot by a 60-year-old suspect armed with a high-powered rifle. He died at a local hospital, leaving his four-months-pregnant wife behind. The suspect barricaded himself, then later emerged in tactical gear and opened fire on SWAT. Officers ran him over with a BearCat, killing him instantly. No prior record. Motive unknown.

I work with homeless. I'm not going to say "housing is a human right" but I do believe that cities have been allowed to target and dehumanize people who ARE homeless. They are not allowed to stand, sleep, gather together, or travel without constant harassment. There is so much unoccupied land away from schools, neighborhoods, businesses, and major traffic intersections that could be used to establish homeless communities and direct, on-site support, referrals, and care/sanitation/security. To say it is fair and appropriate to literally squat in someone else's property is not fair by definition: You would not want someone to live in a property you own, maintain, and are responsible for. Remember just a short time ago "Covid Squatters" were intentionally abusing the system, driving small property owners into ruin. That was not fair. It is not a human right to steal from others.
