To be frank, economics’ insistence on high-level mathematics—such as real analysis—has two main reasons. First, it serves to conceal the field’s own inferiority complex and the zeal of new converts. （econ wants to be like physics instead of other social science poor relatives ）Second, it functions like the British Empire’s colonial civil service examinations, which tested candidates on Latin and Classical Greek. These subjects were essentially a high-cost screening signal. Latin and Ancient Greek are of no practical use for governing a country, yet anyone capable of mastering them is also highly likely to possess all the other skills necessary for governance. (Of course, some mathematics is genuinely useful to economics, while some is not.)

For most PhD students and industry jobs, AI is basically just engineering and coding.
On the other hand, given the math background of most CS students, including myself, many of us may simply not be strong enough to do math in the way some econ students can.

To be frank, I used to think that doing AI research required learning a lot of advanced mathematics. But then several AI and computer science PhDs told me that they actually don’t need to study things like real analysis, convex optimization, dynamic programming, or many of the other mathematical topics that economists are so proud of knowing. In most cases, they either never use them at all, or they simply learn what they need on the spot when a research problem requires it.

I agree. Shanghai is the most developed megacity I’ve seen — more so than New York, Tokyo, or London. I might have to reconsider if I visit Shenzhen or Hangzhou.

If the UK joined the US as the 51st state. We would be the poorest state in the entire union. Mississippi which is portrayed at swamp dwelling hillbillies in majority of international media is above us. I don’t think people grasp how far we’ve fallen in real terms when it comes to GDP per capita. We’ve seen no growth for almost an entire generations. We’ve seen our productivity decrease and our tax increases. The average person on the UK, on £50,000 is less well off than your average Mississippi swamp dweller.
