Herman Jin@ShanghaoJin

Cooking is the research field with the strongest immediate feedback. Anyone who loves research will definitely enjoy cooking. Unfortunately, the studio (or maybe single dorm) near my school I rent has no kitchen. If I get into a US PhD program, I will definitely be passionate about cooking every day. I am even the kind of person who takes photos of every meal and sends them to the group chat.

Yeah it's nice out here. Quiet. Big open roads. Right next to the bay. And we bought a 400sqm house with massive back yard for what would have bought us a tiny apartment in the city. Helps that we own our own company and can work from home - I would NOT want to be commuting into the city for work every day!

As a foreigner in China who saw apartments in Shanghai selling for $100k 20 years ago that are now worth $1M+, I asked my wife, "Does this mean we can now afford to move closer to the city?" She laughed. We looked at the real estate apps. And while prices are down, an apartment that was $1.4M at the peak is now selling for $1.2M. Some areas are hit harder, some not hit at all. Where we live in Fengxian, in a villa compound, there's been almost no change. Same goes for the next district over in Jin Shan. The apartment we bought in my wife's hometown some years ago went up and is now back to around the price we bought it for. Kinda meh 🤷 Most people we know are happy to see prices come down. Things were getting out of hand. Now young people can continue to afford to buy a home. But negative headlines about China still got to make a living I guess 😂

Apparently Deepseek is paying 5500 rmb a day ($19k USD a month) to *interns* out of Tsinghua. Apparently ByteDance pays 8000 rmb a day ($26k a month). Most Chinese returnees from Silicon Valley compare offers between US and China with a 1:3 ratio (because of the lower cost of living / higher quality of life in China). In other words, they would choose the Deepseek offer over a $500k USD offer from the US. Tldr, frontier labs in China are offering competitive pay vs US labs.

if you’re into robotics or AI, picking up Chinese is a good move. Native speakers make up ~50% of top researchers - I’ve lost count of how many times I was the only non-native speaker at a table, and being able to follow the nuance of the conversation was huge. You’ll be fine w/o, but having it lets you jump into a ton of Chinese-only dialogues you’d otherwise miss. It only has to be conversational Chinese because all the technical terms will still be in English.
