STOP COUNTING FAIRWAYS. Most players judge their driver by one number. Fairways hit. It's the wrong number. Here's why. FAIRWAYS HIT: GREAT vs BAD ROUNDS When a 10 handicap plays great, they average 7.1 fairways per round. When that same 10 handicap plays terrible, they average 6.3 fairways per round. 0.8 fairways separates the best rounds from the worst rounds. Less than one fairway. Whatever's wrecking your score, this isn't it. (Great = top 20% of their rounds, terrible = bottom 20% of their rounds) DISASTER SHOTS: GREAT vs BAD ROUNDS During those great round 10 handicaps average 1.72 disaster shots. During the bad round they average 3.96 disaster shots. (A disaster shot is a penalty off the tee, or you're hacking out sideways from the trees after your tee shot.) You're not missing a lot more fairways on your bad days. You're losing golf balls. Keep it in play. That's the whole game off the tee. GOOD GOLF IS MOSTLY: ▶️A lot of mediocre shots ▶️A small handful of good shots ▶️A minimal number of disaster shots

@tt_keesh @KylePorterNS Haha yeah. He may or may not have pushed down the grass with his foot. However, what he did was totally bizarre and needless. If he wanted to practice from a similar lie, he never should have moved over his ball to do so

Not great. To be sure, not a smoking gun -- generous interpretation is that maybe he saw a clump that was similar to his and wanted to see how it felt. And again, he is far from the only guy who does stuff like this. But also ... not great.

@LouStagner Courses that used to test pros are no longer tests. Maybe you don’t have a problem with high winning scores but many players do. Few want to compete in pitch and putt birdie fests. Decreasing forgiveness/CC size and maybe ball rollback would be a start to getting courses back

@jamierkennedy Even if this is the case, isn’t it refreshing? Instead of watching guys go driver, wedge, one putt all day, now we get to watch guys struggle over difficult green-side chip shots, and then try and make the putt. If the wind dies maybe it becomes less exciting but not there yet

Slightly hot take... the Aronimink set-up stinks. I'm not usually one to wade in on how a course is set-up but I think the data suggests this isn't a great set-up. Let me explain. I wrote a piece earlier in the week (see reply below) looking at the data from past events at Aronimink. Yes, they were a long time ago and the 2018 BMW played very wet, but all three events were essentially putting competitions. ▫️In 2018, Keegan led the field in putting and won. Of the players who finished in the top 10, eight ranked in the top 10 on the greens. ▫️In 2011, Nick Watney led the field in putting and won. The top five on the leaderboard that week all ranked in the top 15 putting. ▫️In 2010, Ryan Moore led the field in putting and finished one back of Justin Rose (4th in putting). 5 of the top 6 players on the leaderboard ranked inside 16th or better in putting. That year, of the top 6 players in strokes gained approach, two missed the cut and none finished in the top 15. The strategy at Aronimink appears to be, get it on the green, then try not to three-putt. Potgeiter hit 5 of 14 fairways and ranked 63rd in proximity on his approaches, yet he is co-leader after 18 holes. Of the 7 players tied for the lead: • 5 are in the top 15 in putting • 2 are in the top 15 in driving • 1 is in the top 15 in approach • 1 is in the top 15 around the green My point is this, what do we consider both entertaining and valued at majors? Is it players avoiding three putts, or being rewarded for high-quality tee shots (Open courses), executing precise approach play (think Augusta and US Opens) and the ability to show creativity and skill around the greens (again, Augusta)? None of the top 6 players at this year's Masters finished in the top 15 in putting. Was that an entertaining watch? What was the challenge that week? I know, it's early in the tournament and yes, players that putt well "tend" to score well. But if this plays out for the week, like it has the last three times Aronimink has hosted a Tour event, I fear it could be a flat week. For the record, I hope it's not.
