I was told today by a 17-year-old that there was no way people were writing 10 page papers without Al. Dude, I was writing 10 page papers without having read the book.

there's a permanent easement on one of dad's farms. been brome since I was a kid. doesn't specify that it has to be grass or anything just an easement for a neighboring farm. Dad was going to bale it, it's his farm mind you. Kids of the neighboring farm claim its their hay. Dad: loads up 1066 and plow, plows up easement. it's nobody's hay now.

@PP69153735 @Empty_America Have you had neighbors who are disfunctional mobile home community residents (aka trailer trash)? I have, and I can live with it, but an urbanite seeking rural tranquility would be in for a rude awakening.

If a person said to me "I want to move to rural America" I would tell them to locate near a college that is likely to survive. Property won't really be all that more expensive than otherwise, and it will be 100x easier socially. You probably don't want "real" rural America!
Augustus Melmotte@EnriqueDiazAlva

Collegetows are America's truly unique and superior life environments, specially for full-grown adults. Not NYC. So many people that are miserable trying and failing to make it in NYC would be so much happier in Ithaca.

@gaitanalyst I think that's why he added the caveat "that is likely to survive". Identifying that is the tricky part.

The small second tier rural colleges aren't going to survive. OP's contrarian take is that Blue America does trad life better than Red America but the double contrarian take is that college towns were living on borrowed time.

@s36tic @AlecTorelli Having 600K mostly passive income in Denver would be living the dream. Living the life it typically takes to earn 600K greatly reduces your ability to enjoy the money.

@AlecTorelli Phoenix dont know, but ~600k is phenomenal in Denver with access to some of the best skiing in the world etc. 60k you have a miserly life in Europe unless maybe you’re in Baltics or Bulgaria lol and even then. Speaking post tax, pretax you’d be depressed in Europe. Lol

Something I've been thinking a lot about lately that's very hard to admit and took me about a decade to accept. America is by far the best place to get wealthy, yet one of the worst places to enjoy one's wealth. The average family has a better quality of life taking home 60K a year in a quaint European town than 600K in even a relatively prominent city in the U.S., say Phoenix or Denver. I say this after traveling the world full time since 2005, visiting 50+ countries and living in 7, as well as all across the States.

@uxorious100 I like camping, but my kids are the same age as yours and would respond in exactly the same way. The only good sleep we ever get is at home and even then it's iffy. Maybe when the youngest is 4-5 I'll take it back up.

Josh Richardson on if a regular person can score in an NBA game😂 “No chance. Like there’s NBA players who don’t get 3-5 points in 20 minutes. Like Tony Snell would fry anybody at lifetime fitness, Tony Snell is dropping 40…you’re not going to create your own shot and score…okay maybe you’re in the corner, your man helps off — you better knock it down. That’s the best look you’re getting all game…there’s a lot of pressure out there though dog — this is the NBA now. That 3PT line is far…” (via Ball Knowledge Academy)

"Brady is the GOAT bro he has 7 rings you can't dispute that bro" Tuck Rule, oops now it's 6 rings Dee Ford, oops now it's 5 rings Seattle runs the ball, oops now it's 4 rings Atlanta runs the ball, oops now it's 3 rings See how quickly that becomes 2 SpyGate rings & 1 pandemic ring in 21 years? Oh, and 3 SB losses as a favorite. Stop using rings to rank QB's.

@yhdistyminen @RpsAgainstTrump Tbf, I'm more about this making me skeptical of the previous video of him apparently being able to bench 315lbs. I think I can do 135lbs for 40 reps too and I can't bench 300lbs. I'm skeptical now of Pete doing it.

I was informed about car seats today > new safety law is announced > I ask the lady if it's actual safety or just rent seeking > she doesn't understand > I pull out diagram explaining what is safety and what is rent seeking > she laughs and says it's good safety sir > look inside > it's rent seeking

@Empty_America My siblings and I were in high school from mid '00s to mid '10s. We experienced the transformation take place in real time. I wasn't allowed to dish out the kind of hazing I took as a Freshman just 3 years later as a Senior. Don't really know if this was for the best or not.

My high school experience in rural/working class USA (100% native) was similar. A lot of people who think they don't like the present and would have preferred the past are 100% wrong. Overall things are gentler today, they would jump right back into that time machine.
Tantric Turanist 🇫🇮🇺🇦@cornu__copia

@bronzeagemantis When I was a student in rural/working class Finland (100% native), high school was still quite "rough" when I started, bullying, hazing, violence, substances etc. Pretty much a zoo. It changed quickly, almost overnight, into this very pacified, "woke" thing around 2010.
