I had the opportunity to attend the NFL combine for the first time in 2019, as my nephew was to be drafted that year. I sat watching from the audience as dozens of young black males were stripped down to their underwear, and walked out on stage before a live audience so that the OWNERS could inspect their practically naked bodies. If the prospect had bad joints, he was tossed aside. If the prospect had short arms, he was tossed aside. If the prospect had small hands, he was tossed aside. As I watched this process, a sick feeling came over me. This did not feel like great athletes on the verge of realizing their dreams. I am a historian. This felt like……a slave auction. As part of this “purchasing” process, the OWNERS sent team reps to interview these athletes. Many of these team reps treated these players like they were animals, intentionally saying and doing things to provoke negative reactions. They asked insulting questions like the one team rep who once famously asked former NFL great, Dez Bryant……”Is it true that your mother is a prostitute?” Then there was the team rep who asked Cam Newton if he saw himself as more of a cat, or a dog. Cam told the rep that he saw himself as a human being, and then asked what any of this had to do with football. The team rep told Cam that he was displaying a poor attitude, and asked if he had a problem with following authority. If the prospect responded to any of these insulting questions in a negative fashion, he would be falsely labeled as a rebel with “attitude problems.” The national media would then run with these false labels, and great players would fall in the draft…..NOT because of TALENT, but because of their refusing to bow down to AUTHORITY. These draft prospects were terrified. After all, some 90% of them came from poor families. This was their only hope of buying mom that new car, or moving mom out of the projects. Draft prospects were expected to simply say, “Yes-sir,” and “No-sir”, and to do whatever they were told to do with extreme humility because these team reps had the POWER to kill their dreams, and to destroy their hopes of being “purchased.” —————————————————— Then there was Shedeur Sanders…….a FREE man. He was like….Django. Shedeur did not need to buy cars for his parents. Shedeur did not need to buy a home for his parents. Heck, Shedeur did not need the NFL at ALL. He was working his butt off STRICTLY for the love of the game. He was already rich. His father was also rich. Shedeur did not need to tolerate disrespect from team reps…so he didn’t. Shedeur did not need to bow down at the feet of coaches begging for cash to buy his mom a car…..so he didn’t. NFL Owners, Coaches, and team reps had never seen anything like this. Shedeur was strong, confident, and independent. He did not show up to these festivities with the same desperation of many of the other prospects. The Owners did not like this. They wanted Shedeur to know that even though he was rich, and his father was rich……THEY wielded all of the POWER……..so they decided to make an EXAMPLE out of him……..this decision had crap NOTHING to do with TALENT, and EVERYTHING to do with Buck-breaking. A player who EVERY draft analyst projected to go in the top 10-20 picks……..then fell to the 144th pick as millions looked on in horror. Now you know…..the REST of the story. The End
