What does "hardware-signed data" actually mean, and why does it matter for climate markets? Standard IoT deployments: sensor reads a value, sends data to a server, gets stored in a database. The server is the trust anchor. If it gets compromised or altered, the data loses integrity. Mālama's deployment: the sensor itself signs every measurement using an ATECC608B secure enclave — an ECDSA/SHA-256 cryptographic chip embedded in the device. The data never leaves the hardware without a cryptographic signature, anchored as a CIP-68 NFT on Cardano. The trust anchor is the physics, not the software. Under CSRD and SEC climate disclosure rules, data provenance will be auditable. Companies need to demonstrate not just what they measured, but that the measurement process itself couldn't have been tampered with. Physical Data Oracle. The carbon credit market has a dirty secret: most credits are based on models, not measurements. A project developer submits a methodology. A third-party auditor visits once every few years. A registry accepts the methodology. Credits get issued. Buyers retire them. The cycle repeats. At no point does anyone verify what's actually happening in the soil, the canopy, or the watershed in real time. That's not a data problem. It's a trust architecture problem. And it's why the voluntary carbon market has faced wave after wave of credibility crises. Mālama's approach: skip the model, verify the physics.
