Many attribute it to having life and professional experience, including sometimes spending years doing doujinshi. As you can see, no one really “comes out of nowhere”. White male chud authors, if you've given up on ever making a living at writing or resigned yourself to eking out sales in the sludgepit of self-pub, take note: THE BIGGEST PUBLISHING COMPANY IN JAPAN WANTS *YOU.* 🫵 When I first submitted to a contest run by J-Novel Club (a subsidiary of Kadokawa) I hoped against hope that perhaps Kadokawa had smelled blood in the English-language market. Light novels are essentially Japanese versions of Western pulp adventure novels; the exact demographic Western publishers refuse to touch anymore. And indeed, now it's been said in this interview: "If a foreign author becomes popular in Japan after being published by Kadokawa, it could open doors for the company to expand its business in that author’s home country." But they're also looking for *talent.* One of the perks of being a finalist in the J-Novel contest was attendance at a virtual seminar with some Kadokawa editors, including Mr. Arima, and he did indeed say he hoped foreign authors would reinvigorate the industry. But his college said something just as interesting when asked what he wished more authors would do: he said "go outside, touch grass, get more experiences." And you didn't have to read between the lines too much to translate that as "if I get one more wHaT iF I wAs InSiDe mY fAvOrItE MMORPG gAmE manuscript I am going to make headlines." THEY WANT FRESH IDEAS AND FRESH CONTENT. THEY WANT OUTSIDE PERSPECTIVES AND NOT THE ONE BILLIONTH "I WAS KICKED OUT OF THE PARTY BUT I'M ACTUALLY OP" PAINT-BY-NUMBERS. And they ACTIVELY RECRUIT by running writing contests - a lot of them. This effort is just being spun up so it may be sporadic, but the J-Novel club contests and the ones at Honeyfeed (a smaller webnovel site) are excellent examples. Use Google, keep your ear to the ground, write some damn good novels and be ready to pounce the next time you see a contest from them come along. If you've been lamenting your fate as damned and excommunicate in this Modern Society of ours, the Japanese have handed you your hopepill. One of the biggest publishing companies on Earth with a long history of aggressively scouting for brand-new talents and nurturing them into stars wants YOUR talents and they want to sell to YOUR market. NOW IS THE TIME. TAKE YOUR SHOT!
