What is x402? x402 is an open payment protocol developed by @coinbase that brings the long-forgotten HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code back to life - and gives it purpose in the age of autonomous systems. In simple terms, it allows AI agents to pay for services in real time using crypto. Instead of managing API keys, subscriptions, or complex access layers, an agent can send a request, receive a 402 response with payment terms, settle instantly in USDC (on Base), and retry the request to unlock the resource. x402 is chain-agnostic and built for seamless integration across platforms. With @Cloudflare already supporting it natively, deploying pay-per-use agent services is about to become much simpler. Why does it matter?
