I just heard that Framer pays per template. Is that true?

Correction to something I posted earlier. I went back to the raw data and realized I'd read it wrong. The pipeline was actually applying a small downward vertical shift — a sign error. The offset inverts through "(geometric − optical)", so a line meant to nudge the estimate up shipped as a shift down. But the bigger correction: across all three studies, there's no global vertical bias at all. People center icons on the true vertical midline, within noise. The upward shift is what the literature predicts, but our own data doesn't reproduce it as a global effect. So I removed the constant term entirely: "verticalBias = 0" Any vertical offset now comes per-icon from mass/symmetry. Removing the constant improved the fit to human placements. We'll run a dedicated investigation on this in Phase 4. github.com/Grkmyldz148/op…

@uiuxgorkem Interesting. Doesn't the size of the icon relative to its background affect the result? Maybe it should. But then the offsets would become a dynamic function as opposed to a fixed percentage and harder to use.

To be honest, this was our biggest concern when building the playground. What Optical Center produces is a perceptual average, so by definition it can never be absolutely right or wrong. What we found, however, is that this downward shift is consistently driven by human perception. When people optically center icons, they tend to place them slightly below the geometric center by a fairly consistent amount. We're currently preparing an arXiv paper that explores this phenomenon in more detail.

@uiuxgorkem I'm also not sure if the "2.6%" vertical offset for the play icon is right, especially at large sizes. Screenshot taken from the playground.

@uiuxgorkem Sure. You could send an email to support@icomoon.io. Perhaps we could add an option for generating a CSS that would enable optical centering with precomputed offsets? It might also be useful as a centering tool in the new SVG editor.

Optical Center is ready. The plan was to send the first PR to IcoMoon, but it turns out the IcoMoon repo isn't public anymore 😂😂😂 @Keyamoon, would you like to take a private look at Optical Center?

@Keyamoon Ah, thanks 😄 Ironically, that's the only place where I hardcoded the value instead of using the Optical Center package, and it turned out to be wrong.
