Drought conditions have pushed the Rio Grande river to a critical point. In Albuquerque the riverbed has dried completely.
For the third year in a row exceptionally low winter snowpack rising spring temperatures and ongoing drought have caused the river to run dry through the city. The situation has developed earlier and extended farther north than in prior years placing the river ecosystem under severe stress.
Reservoirs throughout New Mexico sit at critically low levels. Elephant Butte Reservoir for example currently holds only nine percent of its capacity. Water managers face difficult decisions in allocating limited supplies.
The endangered silvery minnow has experienced sharp population losses. Federal efforts to stimulate spawning have met with limited success and many fish remain stranded on the exposed riverbed.
This situation underscores broader challenges facing the American West where states experience drought conditions for about three quarters of the year. Although Albuquerque maintains reliable municipal water supplies through groundwater sources the drying river signals serious long term climate concerns.
Strict terms of the 1938 Rio Grande Compact limit options for water redistribution. Local officials therefore rely on hopes for robust monsoon rains. Experts emphasize the need for stronger public conservation efforts especially regarding outdoor water use. Growing demands from sectors such as technology infrastructure add further strain to already stressed water systems.

@BulwarkOnline It’s shocking that Ohio’s governor hates his own citizens so much. And he does it by seeking to stop what amounts to exploitation of Haitians as cheap labor. Americans could be occupying those jobs and apartments.

Gov. Mike DeWine on the Mullin v. Doe: "It's a mistake for a number of reasons…You cannot fly into Port-au-Prince…It is clearly not safe…It is worse than it has ever been…It's not in the U.S. interest, certainly not in Ohio's interest, to have people who are working every single day, who are supporting a family, who are buying houses, fixing up old houses, starting businesses, and put deep roots in this country and really are contributing — and yank them out…That is a huge, huge mistake."

This week someone targeted my family for harm with a false report. We’re physically OK, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t harmed. I am beyond furious. Whatever your politics, this is awful, wrong, and can never become normal. substack.com/home/post/p-20…

A brilliant listen. I remember that World Cup vividly for so many reasons. Even then I knew it was history in the making.

Bill Maher calls his own audience a “bunch of f*cking liars” after one question about the Obama library.
It started when Maher rolled his eyes at Obama’s library costing $850,000,000 to build just to serve his “ego.”
MAHER: “It looks like something aliens built in Dubai... I don’t understand why progressives like this. Couldn’t that money be better spent on something else?”
“Who’s going to go to this?… Anybody here in this audience planning to go to the Obama Presidential Library?”
[Audience claps]
MAHER: “Really?! You’re a bunch of f*cking liars, you are. You’re not going to the Obama library.”
