The logic of "they hate us for our freedom" requires that the hatred be irrational. Spontaneous. Inexplicable. Cultural, maybe. Religious, certainly. Something essential and pre-rational in the nature of these people that makes them hostile to the normal, reasonable, benevolent presence of American forces in their territory. This logic does several things at once: It removes the need to examine American actions as a cause. It makes the enemy permanently alien, permanently other. It turns the conflict into a civilizational one: us against irrationality itself. It makes permanent war feel like permanent self-defense. It is such a clean operation that it requires no coordination to maintain. Journalists reproduce it because they grew up inside it. Politicians use it because it works. Voters accept it because the alternative, maybe they have reasons, opens a door that leads somewhere very uncomfortable. The irrationality of the enemy is not a conclusion reached by evidence. It is an axiom installed to prevent evidence from being examined.
