Greg Abel shared his thoughts on AI at Berkshire Hathaway. Abel is demanding a strict value proposition first. He calls it narrow AI. They are hunting for precise, measurable return on invested capital before spending a single dollar on new tech. The immediate testing ground is BNSF. Katie Farmer and her team are managing an absolute logistics beast. They are moving more than 750 trains a day across a network that constantly deals with weather delays, equipment failures, and shared tracks with Amtrak. They are running 150 to 200 intermodal trains daily, trying to hit strict 48-hour turnarounds from LA to Chicago. BNSF has a heritage stretching back 177 years to 1849, but Abel objectively admitted they were not fully utilizing technology to operate optimally. Now, they are using narrow AI to create a step change in operating performance. A 1% improvement in network efficiency for a railroad that spans the western half of the United States drops straight to the bottom line. Abel is using BNSF as the beta test to build an operating framework for the entire Berkshire empire. They figure out operational excellence at the railroad, then offer that exact playbook to all the other subsidiaries. The subsidiary managers can choose to embrace it or not, but the structural advantage is centralized and shared. Abel also completely reframed how we should view LLMs. He doesn't look at them as Large Language Models. He calls them Large Logic Models. Berkshire is using these models strictly to solve logical, logistical challenges faster and cheaper. This is classic Berkshire Hathaway.
