The talk of Engr. Kale Kawu's "popularity" today is similar to the talk of "popularity" Professor Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem enjoyed in 2011 when he first contested the PDP primaries and later again in 2019 under the APC. Back then, the popular narrative across town was: “He gave my Ilorin people employment.” As Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and later Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Prof. Oba facilitated employment opportunities for many Ilorin indigenes. However, when he contested the PDP primaries in 2011, those achievements were hardly enough to translate into political support. Instead, a different sentiment began to dominate public discourse, with some people in Ilorin arguing that he employed more people from Oke Imole. This shows that a popularity built mainly around employment opportunities is often not sufficient to secure electoral victory. Nevertheless, Professor Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem remains an enigma and a treasure to behold. @saadatbibire, take note. Campaign never start, ooo.
