Italy is advancing plans to restart nuclear energy production nearly 40 years after shuttering its last reactor in 1987. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is positioning nuclear as a solution to the country's high electricity costs. Italy's cabinet approved a legal framework last year to bring back nuclear power, marking the first concrete step toward lifting the 1987 nuclear ban. A national strategic plan is due by 2027. Italian energy firms Enel, Ansaldo Energia, and Leonardo created Nuclitalia, a nuclear R&D company, to assess economic viability. Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said Tuesday that Italy should restart nuclear "as soon as possible," though officials acknowledge significant challenges including local resistance, earthquake concerns, high costs, and the country's history of twice voting overwhelmingly against nuclear power. The push comes as Italy remains heavily dependent on imported natural gas, with recent conflicts in Iran and Ukraine exposing vulnerability to volatile international energy prices.

On Monday, two U.S. nuclear and fusion companies have signed agreements with Japanese counterparts to expand supply chain connections and leverage technical expertise between the two nations. Wisconsin-based Realta Fusion partnered with Japan's Kyoto Fusioneering on the design, engineering, and fabrication of plasma heating systems optimized for Realta's magnetic mirror fusion machines. Separately, Maryland-based X-energy signed an MOU with Japanese engineering corporation IHI to expand the supplier base for X-energy's Xe-100 reactor. Realta has purchased gyrotrons from Kyoto Fusioneering, which will be installed on the company's first commercial-grade fusion machine at its planned R&D facility. X-energy and IHI will assess manufacturing opportunities for critical components used in X-energy's high-temperature gas-cooled reactor.

WEC Energy Group and Utah-based EnergySolutions are working to bring new nuclear generation to the former Kewaunee Power Station site in northeastern Wisconsin, which has been offline since 2013. The companies submitted a notice of intent to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a major licensing action at the site in Carlton, about 40 minutes east of Green Bay. The existing electrical switchyard and transmission lines remain valuable infrastructure that could support new development. The effort comes amid growing bipartisan support for nuclear energy in Wisconsin. Governor Tony Evers signed two bills last year authorizing a nuclear power siting study and creating a Nuclear Power Summit Board. Nuclear power currently provides about 15% of Wisconsin's electricity, down from 20% when Kewaunee was operating. The state's only remaining nuclear facility is Point Beach in Two Rivers, which has operated two reactors since the early 1970s.

California's Central Coast Regional Water Board approved waste discharge permits for the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in a 6-0 vote on Thursday, clearing the last state regulatory hurdle needed before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission can renew the facility's operating license through 2045. The permits authorize PG&E to continue operating the plant's once-through cooling system, which flushes ocean water through the facility to absorb heat. The California Coastal Commission estimates the system kills approximately two billion fish annually. Diablo Canyon was originally scheduled to shut down in 2025, but California lawmakers extended operations by five years in 2022 due to concerns about power shortages. The plant provides roughly 9% of the state's electricity.

Nuclear energy companies @oklo and @centrus_energy have announced plans to pursue a joint venture focused on deconversion services for high-assay low-enriched uranium at Centrus' Piketon site in southern Ohio. The facility would be co-located with Centrus' enrichment operations and adjacent to Oklo's planned 1.2 GW power campus. Deconversion is the process of converting enriched uranium into uranium oxide or uranium metal before it can be fabricated into reactor fuel. The companies aim to create a central hub that would eliminate the need for each fuel fabrication facility to establish its own deconversion line, improving efficiency and reducing shipping costs across the industry. This addresses what is widely viewed as a potential bottleneck in the nuclear fuel cycle.

India has poured first concrete for two 700 MWe pressurized heavy water reactors at the Kaiga nuclear power plant, officially marking the start of construction for units 5 and 6. The reactors are part of a planned fleet of ten 700 MWe units being constructed in "fleet mode" across multiple sites. India aims to reach at least 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 to support its energy transition. Kaiga units 5 and 6 are expected to achieve criticality within five years. The project uses domestically supplied components and Indian contractors, aligning with the government's self-reliance initiatives.

This week the House Foreign Affairs Committee will vote on legislation this week to bolster U.S. nuclear energy leadership in Europe. H.R. 2504, the “U.S.-European Nuclear Energy Cooperation Act,” from Rep. Bill Keating (D-Mass.), ranking member of the Europe Subcommittee, would require the State Department to strengthen collaboration on nuclear energy. The bill directs the U.S. to prioritize American nuclear products and services in countries developing nuclear programs, followed by allied nations (Canada, Japan, UK, South Korea) when the U.S. isn't directly competing. The strategy aims to counter Russian influence across the entire nuclear fuel cycle, from mining and enrichment through reactor construction.
