Japan's nuclear power plants achieved an average capacity factor of 33.6% in fiscal year 2025, the highest level since the Fukushima accident, with total electricity generation reaching 97.2 TWh.
Fifteen out of 33 possible units have now returned to service following the 2011 accident, according to data from the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum. The increase reflects the gradual return of reactors to operation after meeting stringent post-Fukushima safety requirements established by Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority. Recent restarts include Kashiwazaki-Kariwa unit 6, which became the first TEPCO reactor to resume commercial operation in April 2026.

The American Nuclear Society hosted a webinar on nuclear power for lunar exploration, revealing that nuclear systems have already enabled more than 90 percent of all nonhuman operational time on the lunar surface through radioisotope thermoelectric generators.
Harsh Desai, chief commercialization officer at Zeno Power and chair of NEI's Space Nuclear Taskforce, outlined NASA's plan for semi-permanent crew presence on the moon beginning in 2032. The moon's extreme conditions - vanishingly thin atmosphere, two-week-long nights, and temperature swings of hundreds of degrees - make nuclear the only viable option for sustained operations.
The takeaway: nuclear technology has already proven indispensable for space exploration, with decades of reliable performance in the harshest environments imaginable. As NASA advances toward permanent lunar presence, nuclear power transitions from enabling technology to absolute requirement.

The U.S. Department of Energy is considering a plan to offer utilities billions of dollars in financing to secure components of large nuclear reactors that can take years to obtain, according to Nuclear Energy Institute President Maria Korsnick.
The effort would target long-lead items such as reactor vessels and steam generators to reduce the time required to build AP1000 nuclear plants. Korsnick said the financing plan will help several utility companies interested in AP1000 deployment.
Cameco President Grant Isaac told an earnings call that five or six utilities are in very advanced stages of seeking financing from the DOE's loan office, with utilities interested in ordering long-lead items ahead of time to advance project delivery.
President Trump has set a goal of quadrupling U.S. nuclear power capacity to 400 GW by 2050.

The Belgian government has begun negotiations with Engie to take direct ownership of the country's seven nuclear power reactors, with all decommissioning and dismantling works suspended to ensure all options remain available to the Belgian state.
The Letter of Intent covers the full scope of nuclear activities currently owned by Engie and Electrabel, including the complete nuclear fleet, associated personnel, nuclear subsidiaries, and all assets and liabilities including decommissioning obligations. The parties aim to conclude heads of terms by October 1, 2026.
The initiative reflects the government's strategic decision to extend operation of existing reactors and develop new nuclear capacity in Belgium. Two reactors currently operate: Doel 4 and Tihange 3, which were extended to 2035 under a previous agreement. The government announced plans in February 2025 to operate these units for a further 10 years beyond 2035.
Belgium's federal parliament voted by large majority in May 2025 to repeal the 2003 law that mandated nuclear phase-out and banned new nuclear construction. Five reactors were recently closed under the previous policy before the reversal.

The University of Utah's TRIGA research reactor will become the first university reactor to produce electricity, powering a mini AI data center as proof-of-concept for using microreactors to power full-scale data centers.
The project is a collaboration between advanced nuclear company Elemental Nuclear Energy and the university's Nuclear Engineering Programme, with students and faculty from twelve universities participating. The demonstration will use a compact cold-helium-based Brayton Cycle power generator to convert thermal energy from the reactor into electricity.
The system targets 50 kW thermal input from the reactor, 13 kW turbine output, and 2-3 kW net electrical generation. The resulting electricity will power a high-performance GPU node executing a live AI workload, demonstrating that even small nuclear platforms can produce usable electricity for modern computing systems.
Elemental founder Mike Luther said the objective is to deliver a commercially viable nuclear microreactor by 2030-2031, with experiments like this enabling the company to validate real-world systems and build toward scalable solutions. The university's reactor manager noted this milestone shows that small, safe reactors could be located at data centers rather than in labs.

Ontario Power Generation has set the Basemat foundation module into place for the first BWRX-300 small modular reactor at the Darlington New Nuclear Project, marking a major construction milestone for what will be the first SMR in a G7 country.
The 953-tonne module, with a diameter of 37 meters, was lowered 35 meters below ground in the excavated reactor building shaft. This is the first time in Canada that a reactor building foundation has been assembled modularly in one piece before being lifted into place, demonstrating the modular approach that defines SMR construction.
The Basemat features Diaphragm Plate Steel Composite, an innovative steel-concrete material produced by OPG and partners with skilled trades from across Ontario. The project team can now begin building up, advancing construction on the reactor building's structure, internal systems, and components.

China National Nuclear Corporation has begun loading fuel assemblies into unit 3 at the Changjiang nuclear power plant in Hainan province, marking the reactor's entry into the nuclear commissioning phase.
The first of 177 nuclear fuel assemblies was loaded into the Hualong One reactor on April 30. Changjiang units 3 and 4 represent the second phase of the site, with a total estimated investment of CNY40 billion ($6.4 billion). Both units are scheduled to be fully operational in early 2027.
The Changjiang site already operates two CNP-600 pressurized water reactors that entered commercial operation in 2015 and 2016. CNNC also began construction of a demonstration ACP100 small modular reactor at the site in 2021, a multi-purpose 125 MW unit designed for electricity production, heating, steam production, or seawater desalination.

Big news for Oklo’s Aurora reactor site in Idaho: @NRCgov approved our Principal Design Criteria topical report.
Completed in less than half the traditional review timeline, this approval establishes the core safety and design framework for our Aurora powerhouse.
It also means approved content can be referenced in future applications without being re-reviewed, helping support faster licensing work.
For Oklo, this is a critical step toward repeatable deployment that keeps safety at the center.

Investment firm @Brookfield and @TheNuclearCo announced they will form a joint venture to develop nuclear projects using @WECNuclear reactor technology, as demand for low-carbon power rises globally.
The new company will combine Brookfield's asset management and energy infrastructure development with The Nuclear Company's nuclear project delivery capabilities, including project management, licensing support, and oversight of engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning for Westinghouse AP1000 and AP300 reactors.
Brookfield has appointed the new venture as project manager for the proposed restart of the partially built V.C. Summer Units 2 and 3 in South Carolina. The partners expect to move toward definitive agreements in the coming months, subject to regulatory approvals.

French state-owned utility EDF will invest nearly 100 million euros in a new factory operated by its subsidiary Arabelle Solutions to develop parts for nuclear reactor projects.
The facility in Saone-et-Loire in eastern France will produce heat exchangers for future nuclear reactors, with first equipment manufacturing planned from 2030. The investment supports EDF's plan to develop six nuclear reactors over the coming decades, with the first expected to enter service in the late 2030s.
EDF also has plans for an additional eight reactors to replace France's aging nuclear fleet. The company aims to develop a pan-European supply chain and build the reactors in a series, using experience gained with each project to make the next one quicker and more efficient.
