OH: Testers shouldn't exist—engineers should take control of their own quality. No. The notion that everyone should know everything is nonsensical. Not only is that impossible, but we'd spend all our time learning and no time building. What we DO need is collaboration. Yes, engineers need to take control of their own quality, but they do that by working collaboratively with skilled testers. Same for UX, product, and a host of other skills.

To understand X means you have the ability to act appropriately in response to situations related to X -- for instance, you understand how to make coffee in a kitchen if you can walk into a random kitchen and make coffee.
