Here's a stat ahead of Texas vs. Purdue: Purdue is 5-6 when Braden Smith takes more than 12 shots against power conference teams Purdue is 11-1 when Braden Smith takes fewer than 10 shots against power conference teams Texas' D scheme will look to force Smith to be a scorer.

@apgripsh Okay maybe not EXACTLY the way BYU does it 😂 Certainly BU won’t be landing the Dybantsas of the world, but maybe outside NBA prospects who have development potential — which would be an improvement over the recent talent level.

@urquharthoops "similar to how BYU’s Kevin Young has done it" Think you or some other Butler fan is gonna have to invent a national cookie chain and possibly an entirely new sect of Christianity to do things the way BYU does

If you are a Butler fan and are not stoked about the Nored hire, you are officially a doomer. I’m not saying it’s guaranteed to work — but this guy has all the characteristics Butler needs from its HC. Youth, passion, experience at multiple levels, charisma, toughness, and a deep connection to the program. Two underrated elements of this hire that I’m interested in: 1. Nored’s professional experience being utilized to attract recruits with NBA ambitions, similar to how BYU’s Kevin Young has done it 2. Brad Stevens as a pseudo-consultant to the program

@shoerallycap If he builds his staff the right way, none of this will be an issue
Kevin Urquhart@urquharthoops

@HinkleHangover @kjmac111 You can hire assistants with deep collegiate, recruiting, NIL, etc. experience or whatever else you need to fill the gaps. What Butler needs in a head coach is youth, passion, energy, toughness, and charisma. Nored fits the bill and has the added benefit of being a Butler guy.

@urquharthoops Failed to mention he has no coaching experience in this era and doesn’t know how to recruit/use nil. Rooting for Nored but it’s such a lazy hire. Hey he’s a butler guy though that seems to be the only qualification

@ryanhammer09 Perfect hire imo. Tied to the Brad years. But brings a new flavor coming from the NBA as a very respected assistant. They needed a shakeup. I love it.

I am having a premonition that in several years we will look back at Florida’s 2025 championship as a lightning strike and we’ll all laugh about when everyone had Todd Golden on their “make him say no” list

@jasonrmcintyre Dudes Theory
Kevin Urquhart@urquharthoops

In the age of KenPom and other analytics dominating the title contender conversation, there is something harder to measure but just as predictive as to who will win the championship. Introducing Dudes Theory™️: The team that wins it all is always stacked with dudes. This may seem obvious, but what I mean to say is, it’s never a team that has 1-3 stars and a bunch of solid role players. Almost every team that goes all the way has a roster that makes you say whoa, this team is STACKED. 25 Florida - 6 DUDES - WCJ - Martin - Richard - Haugh - Condon - Chinyelu 24 UConn - 5 DUDES - Newton - Spencer - Karaban - Clingan - Castle 23 UConn - 5 DUDES - Sanogo - Hawkins - Newton - Karaban - Jackson 22 Kansas - 5 DUDES - Agbaji - Braun - Wilson - McCormack - Martin I could go on. Some examples of teams that seemed like serious contenders but did not pass the Dudes Theory™️ requirements and fell short: 25 Duke - 2.5 DUDES - Flagg - Knueppel - Proctor 25 Houston - 1 DUDE - Cryer 24 Purdue - 2 DUDES - Edey - Smith 23 Alabama - 2.5 DUDES - Miller - Sears - Quinerly 22 Gonzaga - 3.5 DUDES - Timme - Holmgren - Nembhard - Strawther 22 Arizona - 1 DUDE - Mathurin You get the idea. March is so tough that with foul trouble, injuries, off nights, great defensive schemes — you need a million ways to win and that requires DUDES. So how do this year’s title contenders stack up? Arizona - 8 DUDES - Bradley - Burries - Peat - Krivas - Awaka - Kharchenkov - Awaka - Dell’Orso UConn - 5 DUDES - Demary - Ball - Karaban - Reed - Mullins Michigan - 4 DUDES - Lendeborg - Mara - Johnson - Cadeau Florida - 4 DUDES - Haugh - Condon - Chinyelu - Lee Duke - 2.5 DUDES - Boozer - Evans - Ngongba Houston - 2.5 DUDES - Flemings - Sharp - Tugler Iowa St. - 2 DUDES - Momcilovic - Jefferson From this, we can clearly see that Duke, Houston, and Iowa St. are eliminated from contention. Arizona, Michigan, UConn, and Florida are your only viable champions, per Dudes Theory™️. As for which of those four will come out on top, there are arguments for each — but a whopping 8 DUDES for Arizona is going to be hard to bet against.

@bigbluekodakk @270BradleySmith Yeah, he’s the #1 mid-major PG I’d target. I don’t claim to know all of them, but he’s the most intriguing I’ve seen. Quick, creative, unselfish, can shoot, get to the rim, and finish. Complete. Tulsa was #35 ORtg.

I’m super intrigued to see how Randy Bennett’s philosophy carries over or changes at the power conference level. I see parallels between him and McCollum but he struck me as a guy who didn’t want the noise that comes with a big job. ASU might be a nice middle ground for him.

I understand the heartburn around NIL/transfers, especially if you’re a fan of a program that it hurts (I am). But if you are a pure basketball fan, it makes things more interesting than ever before. How teams take the season’s results and strategize around their roster for the following year is fun to watch and the clash of differing philosophies makes for great storylines. - Florida failed with transfer guards - Nebraska is spurred by two key transfers, including a boomerang - Arizona inserted key freshmen - Kansas and BYU had incredible freshmen but the puzzle just didn’t come together - NIL powerhouse Kentucky made all the wrong decisions The list goes on. If you’re a diehard of one team, the new landscape can be tough. But if you’re a fan of the game, it’s a blast.

It’s such a crime what the committee did to the BIG EAST. Perhaps they don’t both advance and it’s moot, but UConn and SJU are both legit Final Four contenders and one of them may have to eliminate the other. Only a three-bid league. Egregious.

@MikeCagley Also don’t understand how much excellence goes into repeated conference championships and Sweet 16s. The fact those are taken for granted is a testament to how great they’ve been.

@urquharthoops It’s hard for some folks to fathom that only 1 team wins the tournament annually.

Idk if the Gonzaga takes are satirical, but, if not, they are asinine. Literally a gold standard basketball program. Last two years haven’t been their best, but saying they are a perennial disappointment means you’re either 14 years old or have memory loss.

Overseeded this year? Maybe. But if any program has earned the benefit of the doubt in seeding, it’s them.
