‘Sin is such a great evil that man, by himself, without the aiding mercy of God, can never fully atone for it, even if he were to live a thousand years, spending all those years in repentance, labors, fasts, prayers, and tears. The single sin of Adam, committed in paradise, was of such great weight that all the many tears of the holy forefathers and the blood shed by the holy Prophets could not suffice to atone for it. But it was necessary that the Son of God Himself, descending from heaven, should become incarnate and suffer, and with His own blood pay the debt for human sin to God’s justice. God forgave Adam and Eve their sin, insofar as it pertained to them personally, but not insofar as it (that original sin) pertained to the entire human race. He freed them from the guilt (вины) of sin, but not from the punishment: for the punishing justice of God required satisfaction from the guilty (виноватого). And since Adam and Eve could not by themselves satisfy God for the sin brought upon the entire human race, they were not admitted into paradise until the Deliverer of the human race, the Son of God, should come and satisfy God the Father by His voluntary suffering for the universal sin, and by the cross open paradise.’ St. Demetrius of Rostov, Select Dogmatic works (collected by Met.
