@RenaudFoucart Yes I agree, would be useful if ethnic composition was an issue in those kind of political polls for example. This was informative for me too, I come out with more knowledge about the Bri'ish immigration system and the differences in issues between our countries. Good talk.

@usefulcabl In the end, it was informative. As much as I totally disagree with you, politicians waste a lot of time trying to please voters with "lower immigration" precisely because a lot of people use "immigration" to mean something else.

Carney is super popular, in part thanks to not being Trump. Starmer super unpopular and on the way out. But both attempted the same experiment: radical policies to cut migration numbers because that's "what voters want" Result: voters "who care about migration" just ignore it

@RenaudFoucart ...Right, sorry for saying "third world immigrants" instead of the more specific "non-white men", yep, that is essentially who people are angry at

@usefulcabl you wrote "they care about third world immigrants" you meant "they care about men that are not white"

@usefulcabl But so we spend an afternoon to reach the point that you agree with me. The kind of voters who claim to care about migration cannot be won by lowering lowering migration. They just want ethnic homogeneity

@RenaudFoucart in public life it's generally frowned upon to mention ethnicity, but voters very often simply want less ethnic change in the demographic makeup, you might agree with them or not but that is the reason why they don't care about the specific number of migrants being lower. 2/2

@RenaudFoucart I'm talking about ethnicity too, just like voters are, that's how this conversation started: ethnic change is destabilising, especially when the newcomers are general nuisances at very high rates, this is why people vote against "migration" even when migration is low 1/2

@RenaudFoucart That's a good point, mass immigration to Italy is more recent, so I tend to forget that many in the UK are citizens. Here I've genuinely never seen a white food delivery worker so I'm biased. Great news if the point system works, everything else still stands obviously.

@usefulcabl I think you confuse "migrants" and "ethnic minorities." Where I live (NW) most drivers are white. Some are migrants pre point system. Some illegals. Some are dependent who want to earn money (I know a rich Saudi guy who delivers pizza cuz his wife does a PhD and he's bored)

@RenaudFoucart To stay on topic, if those are the actual conditions that are actually enforced, why is every delivery driver an immigrant? Why is every low income gig-economy job full of immigrants? You know very well that that website is not the real world.

@RenaudFoucart 1. Come on, immigrant women never commit armed robbery or rape against random passersby, just check the crime statistics and tell me if foreign women are a threat in any way. 2. Why do you have to make it weird I'm actually embarrassed now. 🙃

@ArchonofAgents @robsica @AmericanAnthro It's really fascinating how you (deliberately? I hope so) misinterpreted my initial message and then started typing 5 tweets saying the exact same thing over and over and making shit up about me, just so anthropologically interesting (to stay on theme).

@usefulcabl @robsica @AmericanAnthro You are used to illiterate parroting in an echo chamber like a sheep. You don’t know what consensus is, like a typical liberal constantly shift goal posts, calling majority position opinion while also marketing what you call substantial minority “consensus”

@STLD98 @RenaudFoucart I didn't say crime numbers, I said crimes, seeing a foreigner commit heinous crimes as they often do generates a bigger backlash than a native, this is not racism per se, it's a very understandable reaction.

@RenaudFoucart Can I send it to you in dms? I wrote 300 words in response to this but it would be incredibly annoying to send them on here. No one else would read it anyway lol.

@usefulcabl what's your exact policy change? Not "I want fewer poor people with dark skin in my streets." An actual, specific, policy change. And I will tell you what the tradeoff is.

@RenaudFoucart Yep, these people will eventually grow old and be a burden on the UK state. In any case, this is not REALLY the problem because nurses/care wrks are =~ all women, and women are not troublesome, which goes back to what I was saying about what people don't like about immigration.

@usefulcabl The current UK "third world migrants" whining is about the "boriswave:" a lot of nurses, care workers, and their dependents. It is a direct consequence of Brexit, another choice "they don't contribute" because the goal is to keep care salaries low... x.com/RenaudFoucart/…
Renaud Foucart@RenaudFoucart

For all the people seeing "boriswave" as a treason of Brexit: - European nurses stopped coming after Brexit. People died because of that. - The UK scrambled to hire staff from abroad, often less qualified. This saved lives. - Nurses and care workers don't grow on trees.

@RenaudFoucart They don't fix the birth rate, they don't fix pensions, they don't really fix healthcare (they're poor, remember, so they use it more than the general population!)

@RenaudFoucart And I think it would be very useful if they did, but alas, they don't, because people don't vote based on numbers, they vote based on visible results. Btw, I was just telling you how the trade off for less third world migrants in the West don't really exist.
