@STLD98 @NoNo41686393439 "we see that wealth creating is here in the UK but seemingly this is unavailable for British trained people" Do you hate your coworkers too? Aren't British trained doctors in a crisis?

Why are we importing net fiscal drains? I thought the argument was immigrants grow the economy. Wages have deflated, job market and housing market are basically impossible to enter as recent grads find out. At what point do you admit a mistake is being made continuously
M@_saintmatt

You understand that people in work can claim benefits right? You understand that a lot of benefits claimants are working right? You understand that a lot of jobs don't pay their staff enough money right?

@STLD98 @stuartjms And what about the 8 family members they bring over?

@STLD98 How “vast” is this majority? Most are carers or in a broken NHS, a large amount of newer arrivals certainly are not. Was that more because of a post-pandemic economic boost? How do you bolster these points with a current unemployment crisis for trained young people

@NoNo41686393439 @stuartjms The average Boriswave immigrant is earning more than the average Brit despite being younger. The IFS projects an immigrant earning the average U.K wage will easily be a fiscal benefit. How do you not know like the most basic stuff needed to work things out here?

@STLD98 @stuartjms Yes they absolutely are projected to be fiscal drains. Where are you getting otherwise? How can a care worker bringing in 8 family members and not be a drain?

@RenaudFoucart Voters who care about "migration" don't actually care about migration per se, they care about third world immigrant crimes, third world immigrants being public nuisances, third world immigrants being rude, third world immigrants getting preferential treatment bt the state etc.

Carney is super popular, in part thanks to not being Trump. Starmer super unpopular and on the way out. But both attempted the same experiment: radical policies to cut migration numbers because that's "what voters want" Result: voters "who care about migration" just ignore it

@jenuflexion I don’t know why Robert talks about this issue at all frankly when he is responsible for putting out an absolutely moronic analysis on immigrant’s earnings that had to be retracted for being wrong at basic levels.

How exactly was it an 'error'? uk fundamentally shifted to the right, partially on endless fretting over the 'boriswave', which happened under a right-wing govt. Why pretend the right haven’t enjoyed scapegoating immigrants they brought in for their own economic failures?
Robert Colvile@rcolvile

This wrecks the entire point of doing this. You're not reversing the error (of admitting large numbers of unskilled workers, and non-workers, who will be a long-term drain on the economy/finances), you're entrenching it.

@shriverist Brazil definitely has an undersized cultural influence, it could become the America of the Global South if it really wanted to (basically have as much influence as America does with the Northern Hemisphere, but with the South)

This is an extremely difficult and highly subjective task, but here's my attempt to map countries based on whether they punch above or below their weight when it comes to global culture

@STLD98 @rcolvile btw @rcolvile's thinktank was largely responsible for disseminating this erroneous narrative in the first place. they later had to retract their shoddy work

Exclusive from @matt_dathan The Home Office has drawn up plans to relax immigration reforms in a bid to address the concerns of Labour MPs Under a compromise up to 1.6 million migrants could be granted indefinite leave to remain after five years instead of ten — but they would face waiting longer to qualify for benefits The group known as the Boriswave after the boom in immigration under Boris Johnson would be exempted from Mahmood's migration reforms but have to wait longer before accessing benefits such as UC, disability payments, council tax reduction, tax credits and state pension credits A source said: “What it boils down to is benefits. You would allow them to get ILR after five years but you don’t allow them to claim benefits until three or four years later.” They said “most people don’t come here so they can claim benefits”, but the idea that they can do so “as soon as they get ILR” was “politically damaging”. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

@ShinMarginalScr It should be the goal of any Leftist politician to have their name infront of “Wave” by the end of their term. (TBC: Not saying Boris is Leftist lol*)

@shriverist Turkey I feel is a controversial one on here because it has a lot of things it’s famous for (food, cosmetic surgery, nice beaches) but it’s also a huge country right in Europe.
