@Chens89 @tsleaney It’s still the same organization as the men’s team. I guess he really wants to win with his club at some level and is ready to get cut from the U18’s. He actually hasn’t played with his age group in international games at all so there’s not much of a connection with the staff.

@user1647500 @tsleaney No I meant why do you think he’s prioritizing the U20 team if he basically didn’t play for them all year over the U18 NT?

Viggo Björck suspended? Reports coming out of Sweden indicate Björck has chosen to defy the Swedish Federation and stay with the Djugården U20 team to play in the league finals instead of heading straight to the U18 World Championships

@Chens89 @tsleaney Well it’s simple, he’s not fully committed to the U18 NT if he isn’t willing to go to the camp. It’s still important preparation for the tournament. Unless both his club and the federation are making demands for him to stay/go, he chose his club’s U20’s over the NT.

@scottcwheeler @TheAthletic @TheAthleticNHL @m_bultman With you regularly admitting you heavily despise everything about Finland and Finnish hockey (thus unable to be unbiased when talking about Finland), what unrealistic demands do you have towards Finnish players and hockey? What would be good enough for you to change your tone?

@Chens89 @tsleaney He’s choosing U20 over the NT, he’s played for the pro team all season. Simply put, if it was the pro team it would probably be fine but it isn’t. And the U20 NT is not the U18, he hasn’t played with his age group since his U16 season, he basically is a new player to an extent.

@user1647500 @tsleaney It isn’t as if he’s blowing off their camp for family vacation, he’s showing loyalty to his club team he’s played for all year, and is still willing to play for both. Especially since he’s played WJC already, it isn’t like he’s new to Swedish NT.

@JensLindmark @WJCrankings @FutureTreKroner I’m sure that’s a part of it too but I doubt they’re happy about players not committing to the camp before the tournament either. If it was pro playoffs then maybe but over U20? I think that’s a problem as well.

@user1647500 @WJCrankings @FutureTreKroner It's not only about him. There's a total of 7 players from the teams in the final on the roster. If they let him go late, the teams want to keep the others aswell. Letting almost half the team miss camp and potentially arrive the same day as the tournament start isn't optimal.

@HiddenHockey Does it? In which European countries do players prioritize U20 teams over the NT? You hopefully accept and realize that pro teams not letting players go is another level above this situation. That’s understandable, players choosing U20 club over the NT camp isn’t.

@HabsWest Hemming isn’t the most talented player for Finland though? And I’m sorry but what he/his parents tried to pull should not be allowed and luckily he faces consequences for it. Illegally trying to get out of a contract and possibly fucking over hockey/sports landscape in Finland…

@WJCrankings And 2 are pretty reasonable. Hemming simply is suffering from consequences of his side’s actions that were simply wrong in many ways. Björck also made a choice, his U20 club over the U18 NT camp and the staff clearly want everyone there from day 1 or else it wouldn’t be a problem

@Woodster1776 Well the teams that fly there a week or so in advance aren’t just hanging around doing nothing. It’s a camp to practice and prepare so skipping it isn’t likely a thing any coach or GM would be okay with. Only exceptions usually are players who are with their pro teams, not U20.

@tsleaney I don’t think coaches/the federation expecting full commitment from players who got the privilege to represent their country internationally to be crazy at all. There’s a camp before the tournament starts, simply wanting every player there from day 1 is very reasonable.

@Hockey_Robinson This is crazy stuff from Sweden. Suspending your best player and potential tournament MVP for this is a straight up wtf decision. Especially when he can leave right after the finals and make it for the first game and if not at least the second game.

@Hockey_Robinson Completely different circumstances though. Different coaches/staff, one was playing for promotion for a pro team, one is the U20 team who hasn’t had the player play for them until the last handful of games. Just shows that the camp before the U18’s is important.

This seems like a strange hill to die on. Players arrive late to this event every year. Last year, Anton Frondell arrived on April 26th after the HockeyAllsvenskan finals - 3 days after Sweden's opener He received a hero's welcome.

@WJCrankings @FutureTreKroner It’s not about if he has time to join in before the first game, it’s the fact he’s deliberately choosing to miss the camp before the tournament. The federations aren’t flying there a week in advance for fun, it’s normal to expect and want the full team to be committed from day 1.

@Jerome_Berube Frondell joined a team with different coaches and possibly management staff too who were fine with it, the current staff clearly wants the whole team together from day 1, nothing wrong with that. Frondell also was with the pro team, not the U20 side, that’s a big difference too.

@PBaracchini There’s absolutely nothing ridiculous about Hemming’s absence. Unless people in NA support and encourage players to try and illegally get out of contracts then the worship he gets makes sense. He is out solely for his side’s actions. And I understand Sweden’s decision and POV too

@JoshRob_94 Oh, so every real life and social media interaction for the past 6+ years I’ve had is just imagination? There is a real hateful/disrespectful attitude towards Finland and Finns in NA hockey circles, accept it or keep denying it, won’t change facts.

@lassialanen Certain audience will not be impressed because of Pulju being mentioned. Finnish players can’t really win, either they have great seasons comparable to Laine/Pulju etc when they were young, or they have “average” seasons points wise and thus can’t possibly be good players.

Juho Nyberg (#2029NHLDraft) finished his season with 24 goals and 40 points in 41 games with Ilves’ U18 team. It’s the second-most productive season in the history of the league by a U15 skater, only being beaten out by Jesse Puljujärvi. Highlights:

@Hockey_Robinson Interesting to see if/when the Finnish 09’s have good or great performances but then at the start of the next season they’ll somehow “come out of nowhere” even though they’ve been great in internationally for 2 seasons now so there’s no excuse for people to not know them

Finland has announced its camp roster ahead of U18 Worlds. Notably, as expected, Oscar Hemming, who remains in a dispute with his club team, the federation and the IIHF, will not be participating. Oliver Suvanto and Juli Piiparainen headline their roster.

@KRangersReport Why is it comical that contracts are expected to be honored in normal parts of the world? They’re not there just because, they’re legally binding and trying to get out of them illegally isn’t going to help the player either. Also the constant hate towards Finland is so pathetic

Have to feel so bad for Oscar Hemming whose #2026NHLDraft season has basically come to an end and only playing ~25 games with him not being invited to the #U18Worlds. Comical that Finland and/or the IIHF continues to punish the player and make a mockery out of him for others
Lassi Alanen@lassialanen

Finland announces their camp roster ahead of the #U18Worlds. Most notable info: Oscar Hemming is not included. Given Tappara’s ongoing Liiga season, Oliver Suvanto is marked down as a possible inclusion later on. Juho Piiparinen will join immediately.

@toby1kenobiii @lassialanen Not really when there’s more than reasonable reason to not select a player. I for one heavily dislike a player who refuses to honor contracts (even if it’s his agent/parents advising, he still decides what to do) and I understand why he’s not selected. They knew the risks.
