Lots of weird takes on the Hungarian election result from both left and right here. Peter Magyar is a socially conservative immigration restrictionist who wants to cut taxes and double the defence budget. He criticized Orban for admitting too many guest workers, and wants to increase Hungary's already generous pro-natal incentives. On virtually every issue, his platform is well to the right of centre, by European standards. His foreign policy is to end Orban's alliance with Putin, remove the Hungarian veto on EU loans to Ukraine, normalize relations with the European Union while opposing more Euro integration, and strengthen relations with Eastern Europe's anti-Russian governments, e.g. Poland. His election was not a sudden shift to the left, but a rejection of Orban's corruption, the failure of his interventionist / statist economic policies, and the humiliation of his relationship with Putin.

Not surprising. The Israelis have already indicated they're looking to eventually wean themselves off of direct US military aid, which doesn't amount to much anyway. Continued debates over that aid in Congress just draw more attention to them, which will be undesirable with US/Israeli relationship under more scrutiny than ever because of the war. The amount of money the DoW has spent on this war so far dwarfs years of FMF aid to Israel. This is a political win for the Democrats that allows them to distance themselves from the Israelis while costing the Israelis very little in real terms. I expect to see more of this.

This paid propagandist of the Orban regime lambasts the NYT for failing to understand 'Hungary is a democracy, and that Orban actually wins elections.' He seems unaware that most autocrats today 'actually win elections.' Like Orban, they use state power to tip the scales in their favour. Like Orban, they use oligarchs to subjugate the media. Like Orban, they use the intelligence services against journalists and political opponents. This is called 'competitive authoritarianism.' It harnesses the formalities of democratic governance to obscure and to fortify autocracy. Its Hungarian variant employs a small army of Westerners - mostly conservatives like Dreher - to promote the regime's narratives about traditional values, patriotism, and the greatness of The Leader. It's no accident that they ignore the rot at the core of the regime, the collusion with the Kremlin, and Orban's personal corruption. Because these propagandists are an integral part of the system. When it crumbles, when transitional justice is set in motion, we will learn a lot about what they were paid to transform Orban's sordid autocracy into a conservative utopia.
