The Russian Orthodox Church built this structure in 1992 on King George Island, making it one of the southernmost permanent churches on earth. What makes it historically notable is the timing, it was constructed and consecrated just as the Soviet Union was collapsing, funded and built by the Patriarch of Moscow at a moment when the Russian Orthodox Church was reasserting its public presence after seven decades of state suppression. The logs were cut in Siberia, prefabricated, shipped to Antarctica, and assembled by monks. It serves the researchers at the nearby Bellingshausen Station and remains staffed by rotating monks who winter over in one of the most isolated postings in the world.
