The ninth conference on Network Science in Economics will be held April 19-21 at the U of Minnesota. Submit by January 24 via sites.google.com/umn.edu/nse2024 It's a great conference, especially for young researchers to get feedback on research and form new connections.

🤷🤷‍♀️New data: SHRUG 2 is out!! @devdatalab has been working on this for two years, a HUGE update to India’s coolest data platform: 1. Maps of *every* 2011 town and village, with ids 2. All data at every geography (villages, districts, ACs, etc)... devdatalab.org/shrug 🧵1/N

@RuxandraTeslo @ben_golub @vasu_maybe (I still should learn Python because so many people use it. I bought a book for that a while ago, but haven't read it yet. I have a project in mind that would be perfect to learn Python, but I don't know when I'll have time.)

R is really nice to analyze data, but as soon as you want to do something that is a little bit power-intensive (such as a simulation on a moderately large network with loops that can't be vectorized), you really have to write the routine in C and use Rcpp or it will kill you.

@vasu_maybe @ben_golub I still like to analyze the data in R, partly just because I'm used to it, so I like Rcpp because it allows me to write the power-intensive routine in C and interface it with R to analyze the output. It's really a cool package.

@ben_golub @vasu_maybe I'm trying to model the polarizing mechanism we were discussing the other day. It's fine as long as I only have 1,000 nodes in the network, but when I run the simulation with 10,000 nodes it takes forever. Everything inside the loop is vectorized, but the loop itself can't be.

@ben_golub Yeah I was surprised when a lot people in the first year had “2028” in the email address 👀

@ben_golub @vitnwu Im sensing a strong positive correlation between the approaching midterms and the number of brief reflection periods
