@joybhattacharj I sincerely feel that @therealkapildev isn't celebrated as much as we should have, he was a workhorse who bowled long spells on our pitches and got most of those wickets. A great leader who led from the front, Sunny Gavasker once said that Kapil is probably the greatest we had !

Today, 45 years ago, India won a test match in Australia against a side that included Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee, Rodney Marsh, Allan Border and Len Pascoe. We bowled them out for 81 the fourth innings. When they started batting in that innings, both Kapil and Shivlal Yadav were injured, and Dilip Doshi and Karsan Ghavri were the only frontline bowlers. Ghavri got Dyson and Chappell on consecutive deliveries to leave them 3 down overnight. The next morning Kapil strapped up his thigh and came roaring in. He has had better test innings figures, but probably never bowled a braver or more important spell than that 5 for 28!

In March 1987, India and Pakistan played the final Test of their cricket series at Bangalore. At the same time, India played Argentina in a Davis Cup match at Delhi. We had one TV channel, Doordarshan. It kept switching between both events. And stayed with the Davis Cup when it seemed crucial for Indian viewers for the final two matches featuring Ramesh Krishnan and Vijay Amritraj. This in spite of the Test at Bangalore featuring the likes of Gavaskar, Kapil, Imran, Miandad and so on, swinging back and forth. A lot of us got to see a legendary Indian tennis performance. Yesterday, many did not even know that India was about to record a historic Davis Cup in, because more time was allotted to Ireland vs Sri Lanka and England vs Nepal. How times change.
