In Italy, children went crazy in the '80s when Goldrake, a Japanese anime featuring a giant mecha fighting for humanity, appeared on our TVs. We'd never seen anything like it: so dramatic, so meaningful. It didn't even look like a cartoon; it felt like something much more important. Some of us learned how to draw the giant robot and other characters and did that for hours. We weren't just fans—we were fanatics. It was a phenomenon like no other in Italian media history. Some of us still cry when listening to the opening music of the show after all these years. It's crazy that I can now animate my own Goldrake scenes. Maybe I'll make a full-length fan movie if I have time one day
