Reentrancy Still Destroys Protocols Reentrancy remains one of DeFi’s oldest - and most dangerous - vulnerabilities. It occurs when a contract sends funds before updating balances, allowing a malicious contract to re-enter the function repeatedly and drain funds in a single transaction. How the attack works: 1️⃣ User calls withdraw() 2️⃣ Contract sends funds 3️⃣ Attacker’s contract re-calls withdraw() before balance updates 4️⃣ Funds are withdrawn repeatedly until the protocol is drained How to prevent it: ✔ Follow Checks → Effects → Interactions ( update state before transfers ) ✔ Use Reentrancy Guards (nonReentrant) ✔ Implement Pull Payment patterns Old vulnerabilities still steal new money. 🚨 @FOOMCASH zk-Verifier Exploit — $1.6M Lost #FoomCash suffered a critical exploit leading to $1.6M+ in losses - about $1.3M on Ethereum and $316K on Base. This was not caused by reentrancy, price oracles, or flash loans, but by a misconfigured Groth16 zk-SNARK verifier. ♻️ Root cause: The verification key was deployed with a fatal mistake where gamma and delta were identical. In Groth16, these values must be different to ensure proofs are secure. Because they were the same, attackers could generate fake proofs off-chain without any real deposits and repeatedly withdraw funds. The smart contracts behaved as designed — but the cryptography behind the verifier was broken, allowing unlimited valid-looking proofs. Key lesson: zk systems add powerful privacy and security features, but one incorrect verification key parameter can completely break proof soundness. Best practices: • Independent zk verification key audits • Trusted setup validation • Cryptographic invariant testing • Formal verification where possible If you're building zk-based DeFi, cryptographic review is just as important as smart contract audits. #Defi #defiexploit #cryptohack
