New data released by the ONS has revealed, indicatively, that the total spend on R&D across the UK reduced from 2.81% of GDP in 2021 to 2.77% of GDP in 2022. This comes as new NCUB analysis reveals that for every £1 spent by the Government on R&D, an additional £3.09 to £4.02 is then spent by businesses investing in UK R&D. I note an important measurement error: paper gauges public science by subfield publication numbers. Yet, not all publications are equal; some are more important, overlooking quality differences. Marginal increases matter in science

IVs based on political composition of appropriations subcommittees may lack exogenous variation. Other factors, like government funding for R&D, could impact both subcommittee composition and corporate R&D.

I'm sympathetic to view that big corporate labs combining basic science with proximity to market signals big driver of postwar innovation & enviable (cf today's) productivity growth rates. Not convinced by direction of causality authors deduce from econometrics tho
