my take: big quake in indonesia and people in coastal areas need to take it seriously first, ask questions second. reports say the quake was around 7.4 to 7.6 in the northern maluku sea, and indonesia did put out tsunami warnings/advisories for parts of north maluku and north sulawesi. small tsunami waves were later recorded, with the highest reported around 0.75 meters, and the warning was later lifted. my read: this is why earthquake headlines get messy fast. first numbers change. warning levels change. people online keep repeating the first alert even after officials update it. the real thing to watch is what BMKG and emergency officials say right now, not just the first viral post. one person was reported dead and some buildings were damaged, so this was not nothing. bottom line: real quake, real tsunami alert, real damage — but also a reminder that early disaster posts age fast, so people need the latest official update, not yesterday’s panic.
