I just paid €4.80, like a proper fool, for an almond croissant from The Art of Coffee, a perfectly pleasant but fairly run of the mill café chain where their pain au chocolat is, more often than not, stale. Now, this croissant is large and stuffed with filling, but nearly a fiver for a pastry is simply too much. Yet this is how we're going. I could have said no thanks and walked out when the server told me the price, but you know when someone insults you and you freeze, and it takes you a minute to react? That, except with pastry.

If you decide to #spoilthevote in the forthcoming Irish presidential election, you should know that you can write/draw anything, any name you want on the ballot paper. If you do anything that could be interpreted as indicating a preference for one of the three establishment approved candidates, that ballot will likely be counted for that candidate. My particular ballot will be cast looking something like this sample. In my case I will be writing ‘1. Maria Steen’. I will be putting an X beside each of the three listed candidates (so as not to leave a blank). I will also write ‘RON’ for ‘Re Open Nominations’ on the ballot. To be clear, this will not elect Maria Steen, the nominations will not be reopened but crucially, my ballot will be counted as a ‘Spoiled’ ballot and the total number of spoiled ballots will be a matter of public record nationally and in every constituency in Ireland. #SpoilTheVote
