Psalm 22 🧵 Why Have You Forsaken Me? To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.   My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2  O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
    and by night, but I find no rest. 3  Yet you are holy,
    enthroned on the praises[a] of Israel. 4  In you our fathers trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.

Why does English not have a plural “you”? Well, it’s because “you” is already plural. The singular is “thou”. This was observed grammatically in Old English, when one person was þū and multiple people were ġē, but after the Norman invasion the plural became the polite form of address, and by the 1800s that became the nigh-universal standard. Nowadays, as a result, we have to reinvent the plural with contractions like “y’all”.

It was deliberate in many ways, I’m certain of it. My grandfather worked in one of the mines, my mother, his daughter went to the local grammar school in the ‘50’s and did elocution lessons which many of her generation were strongly encouraged to do and made to feel that it was better to speak with Received Pronunciation, proper BBC English as was and be embarrassed of sounding like they came from the area.

Absolutely correct. Men (mostly miners/ex-miners) would also call each other “love”, in the same way they might say “mate” or “pal” and in was perfectly normal and manly but people from outside the area thought it was odd. Over the border in South Yorkshire, seem to recall “duck” being used in a similar way.

@KarlKolchak01 @vicksterwrites @grahamscheper I'm so glad you said that cos I thought I remembered that,but I wasn't sure 😁 and if I remember rightly, thou would be used affectionately or between people who knew each other, but they'd say you in more formal contexts?

@benrcrenshaw Cradle Catholics fall away, but conversions are increasing dramatically—just as Tocqueville observed and predicted nearly two centuries ago!

29  All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive. 30  Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; 31  they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it. End of 🧵

26  The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
    May your hearts live forever! 27  All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you. 28  For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.
