A trailer for a 1.5 hour video essay I've worked on for 3+ years with James Zborowski, coming soon in InTransition. Making this video has been one of the most challenging & exciting things I’ve done in my career. It reflects on the challenges of doing videographic criticism.

Finally finished this video essay! It's an adaptation of a work-in-progress article 'YouTube, Autofiction & Online Self-Performance'. This clip (feat. @FoldableHuman & @thelindsayellis) sets up one key theme, explored later via the work of @contrapoints. Full video below.

@LesserFeat Not familiar with any of the two songs (sorry, I know the people though), but maybe that's good (?) because to me it sounds very natural – almost as intended (as do "Rage against Vanessa Carlton" or "AC/VC", so much so that the original tracks are almost 'lacking' to me...😅)

@Matt_Denny I assume you're looking for things in English? Otherwise, I'd have a good one in German... There are two analyses of specific Desktop Films: "Screening Screens: Cinematic Spectatorship in the Desktop Film Noah" by Lydia Tuan (Cinema & Cie 2020)

Can anyone suggest a good article or chapter that would make suitable reading for 1st year UG students on what a desktop film *is*. I've been reading some good stuff that's dealing with more complex issues related to the form but nothing that really fits the "start here" criteria

@Matt_Denny Yes, good idea, since they do share basically the same visual aesthetic, though for different means and effects. The one I go to there is Bešlagić, Luka: "Computer Interface as Film. Post-Media Aesthetics of Desktop Documentary:" (AM Journal of Art and Media Studies 2019)

@Matt_Denny I'd reccomend looking at the introduction of "Screen Images. In-Game Photography, Screenshot, Screencast" that references the German article a bit in English.

@Matt_Denny The other one is "Between Visibility and Media Performativity. The Role of Interface and Gesturality in Desktop Cinema" by Elio Ugenti (Cinema & Cie 2021, vol. 21 no. 36/37)

With YouTube approaching 20 years of age, it's certainly interesting to see reflections on its beginnings both on and by some of its very important figures. In some ways, the "amateur" and "professional" debate is still continuing, albeit with more hindsight.

Just after I've finished Dan Olsen's ("Folding Idea") newest video that, in parts, reminded me quite a lot of Bo Burnahms "Inside", I get reccomended this analysis on with an accompanying statement about what the YouTube video essay can be.
