Chantal Hébert: "This week a number of prominent Conservatives, Jason Kenney, James Moore, Lisa Raitt, basically argued, 'Let's keep this guy there', and none of them went with the 'because he's so much better than Mark Carney' line. And what that basically tells you is, let's keep him there to keep that chair warm."

The real problem with a massive parking structure at Ontario Place is that it will flood the waterfront with more cars - an area where we don't want them or need them. Our waterfront has become better and better as it has become more and more urban. More investment in space for people and activity, more investment in neighbourhood amenity, more investment in walking and cycling. That is what is needed. Yes, the parking garage is problematic in terms of cost and as a waterfront land use. But the idea of adding more cars to city neighbourhoods that are already gridlocked is a bit of a head scratcher. Why would we do that? This is a transit-rich area. Who are the mysterious clientele of this monster spa - and why don't they want to use transit or walk anywhere? thestar.com/news/gta/provi…

Adam McNamara will send the Ontario Science Centre the $522,500 required to keep it open for 2024. All those summer children’s programs will not need to be cancelled/relocated. All those staff won’t be laid off or displaced at the 11th hour. I’m retweeting this because I would like to see this happen. (And I know Adam, and I know he is serious.) Would you like to see this happen?

It’s been a really tough week in our industry losing Glenny Mac. Such an integral member of our Olympic team and just such a salt-of-the-earth human. His laugh could make anyone’s day. Much strength to his family, who meant the world to him. 💔

Such a classy tribute to our friend and colleague, Glenny Mac, from @AndiPetrillo and the folks at @cbcsports as they opened their show today --

PARIS 2024 MEDALS UNVEILED They are absolutely stunning. The best part? Each medal has an embedded piece of Eiffel Tower in it. Literally taking home a piece of history should you reach the podium. All the details on these brilliant pieces of hardware: cbc.ca/sports/olympic…

Here’s a timelapse I captured of the annular eclipse from Saturday morning. Seeing it like this really helps me visualize the movement of the sun and the moon.

Canadians deserve more than smug silence when public projects go off the rails - the Eglinton Crosstown is four years late and $3-billion over budget. We worked evenings and weekends to create the design concept for that gorgeous green track you see in the picture (and the rest of the project, from the below grade tunnels to the stations) on schedule to ensure no delays. But today, 95% built (maybe more?) there is no one in charge to grab the bull by the horns and get it over the finish line. $3 billion over budget and no opening date in sight? No wonder people are giving up and getting back in their cars. Time for leaders - at the Province, at the City - to step up, grab the bull by the horns and tell the public how and when they are going to get this done. #comments" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">theglobeandmail.com/opinion/editor…

Fourteen years ago, when the big three automakers were struggling to stay afloat, my administration and the American people stepped in to support them. So did the auto workers in the UAW who sacrificed pay and benefits to help get the companies back on their feet. Now that our carmakers are enjoying robust profits, it’s time to do right by those same workers so the industry can emerge more united and competitive than ever.

It's uncanny how, in Vancouver at least, the weather has suddenly shifted this weeked from summer to fall-like. Even in a house where no one is going to school, the Tuesday after Labour Day does feel like the start of a new season. Hope your September is safe and productive.

Mr. Dressup (Ernie Coombs) is a Canadian icon, but puppeteer Judith Lawrence also helped shape our childhoods. Let's learn more about her! She came to Canada from Australia at the age of 22 & created Casey & Finnegan while on Butternut Square. When Ernie Coombs started Mr. Dressup, she joined him. She remained on the show until the late-1980s. Along with creating an iconic part of our childhoods, she also wrote many books in The Young Canada Reading Series, and co-authored books for D.C. Health on women and work. In the 1960s, she co-founded The Voice of Women and in the 1970s she sat on the National Action Committee on the Status of Women. She also wrote for publications like Broadside, where she expressed her views on peace. In 2001, she was awarded the Order of Canada. She has lived on Hornby Island, British Columbia since she retired, where she is a community leader, farmer and designer of the recycling depot. Living with her in her home are the original Casey and Finnegan puppets. She even brought them out for a video in March 2020 to encourage people to isolate and socially-distance. She said that its not unusual for people to begin crying when she brings out the puppets. You can hear my interview with Judith in my episode about Mr. Dressup here: canadaehx.com/2020/11/28/mr-… If you enjoy my Canadian history content, please consider a donation to Canadian History Ehx: buymeacoffee.com/craigU
